Hmm, he doesn't look anything like that. But a name doesn't necessarily refer to a character's appearance. Bowser is named after a Korean dish in Japanese (Kuppa/Koopa). Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. I read in an older revision of Ogura's Wikipedia article that he is an eel, can anyone confirm this? There was no citation. Ogura is referred to as the "Dark Eel". So yeah, Ogura is an Eel.

has this piece of internet knowledge (via TMK) ever been officially confirmed?
I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was a reference to the food and a play on 'kappa', though. in any case, Korean food is delicious.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know! Is this creature here also Ogura or another villain? Looks fairly creepy in comparison to the uber-cute style of the Stafy games. www.gamekult.com/images/ME0000691744/EDIT: I found out that this being is named Dejiru, so it isn't Ogura. has this piece of internet knowledge (via TMK) ever been officially confirmed? About kappa, I read that Prima's guide for Super Mario Galaxy told that Bowser is based on that creature. However, I doubt that THIS is reliable, because Prima's guides also stated that Peach and Daisy are cousins, that Star Spirits first appeared in Mario Party 5 (instead of Paper Mario), and that Toadette is Toad's sister.

Found the interview thanks to an older posting of Deezer in the TMK forums. It was revealed by Miyamoto in a Famitsu interview, so it's official: www.famitsu.com/game/extra/special/2000/zelda/zelda04.htmlI haven't read that Miyamoto stated that Bowser/Koopa is based on kappa, though. Bowser lacks a common feature of the kappa incarnations in Japanese popular culture (e.g. Kapp'n from Animal Crossing or Kapar from the Kirby series), the bowl-shaped depression in the head. The King of the Koopas (or the Great Demon King as his full title is in Japan) doesn't have something like this.

First of all. epic win for linking Shin Chan.
Secondly, I'd never noticed Bowser's lack of a beak before. It's weird because both real turtles and Koopas have them. So, apperently, Bowser and his kids are deformed by Koopa standards.

I love the concept of kappas. One of the things that got me into Japanese lore and myths.
