Well... on Monday I ordered a new PC with loads of shiny new bells and whistles. It has loads more space and speed for efficient website managing. It should be delivered late this week or early next.
However, it seems my current PC got wind of this and became a little jealous yesterday evening. And died. Horribly. Which MAY mean I have lost everything on my PC. The website as it stands is fine and can be downloaded again... but anything I had waiting in the wings is dead and gone. Thankfully, anything that was halfway complete is probably up on the site already, but I may have lost a lot of research and files.
Me and the IT guys at work will be seeing if we can salvage any of the data. Hopefully it's still there, and it's just a necessary bootup part that has died. But lucky that I already have a new model on the way, eh?
But this will obviously cease updates to NinDB until my new PC is set up with my broadband connection, the current version of the site is downloaded, and any salvageable materials have been... well... salvaged. Hopefully everything I wanted to keep is still there.
Not that you would have gotten any updates this weekend anyway. It's my girlfriend's birthday, dontcha know... and I'm on holiday the weekend after that too. But I'll try and slip in some updates in the meantime.
Cross your fingers for me that the new PC works without any problems, eh?

Well, my new PC is being delivered tomorrow evening. Tomorrow I will also be bringing my hard drive into work to see if we can salvage any of the data. Keep your fingers crossed!

Which is a reminder to myself that I really should make a backup of all my files.
Still, losing files is rough. I get teary-eyed when I think of files I lost to the void.

*crosses fingers* There, happy now? May I ask what the specs are of the new PC?

Why don't you assemble a PC yourself? It's cheaper, and assembled PCs work better than pre-made PCs. Your old PC has died, but that doesn't mean data loss... if it is your BIOS or CPU or RAM or display card or... that has died, that means you have no data loss at all. Don't worry. It's about the time for you to store your site on your computer as the original copy, and not to download your own site for backup. That way you can do anything with your site. You don't see MY PC would even be down for more than 48 hours, right?

I'm hoping so. My girlfriend has managed to get the internet working on her laptop though, which is how I'm speaking to you now. Assembling can be a cheaper alternative, but when this one I got brand new with fairly decent specs (though I couldn't care less about specs, so I couldn't tell you exactly what they are) for £320 then I'm not going to complain about price. Also, I'm taking bits of my old computer and using them anyway. Hopefully the new one will have a bit more speed too... mine was starting to choke on big files.

That's okay... I use one at work, and they are just as prone to crashing as any PC I've used. Also... I hate having to use the keyboard for shortcuts. I like to use one hand for updating the site and the other for eating a sandwich or something. And I want my mouse to have MORE buttons and scroll things... not less Besides, my current PC is about 7 years old... and it worked fine most of the time. At least now I know exactly how to treat it so it doesn't crash loads.

Get a Macintosh! Cheaper in the long run, less crashes, ultra-cool OS....c'mon. You know you want some. I want to get one, but I can't afford that. That's okay... I use one at work, and they are just as prone to crashing as any PC I've used. I've never heard of a Mac can be crashed. Also... I hate having to use the keyboard for shortcuts. I like to use one hand for updating the site and the other for eating a sandwich or something. And I want my mouse to have MORE buttons and scroll things... not less Put a PC mouse on a Mac. It works. (Mac mice have AT LEAST one button, but not all of them have only 1 button. If you're using sone sort of 5-button PC mouse, it should work on the Mac anyways.) Besides, my current PC is about 7 years old... and it worked fine most of the time. At least now I know exactly how to treat it so it doesn't crash loads. Congrats. I change my PC core every about 4 years.

Good news everybody! My hard drive is perfectly intact and all of the files are safe! This means that once my PC arrives tonight, and gets set up, it's simply a matter of transferring the files from this external drive one of the guys at work is lending me. Hoorah! NinDB is okay!

Well, here I am on my shiny new PC! It works, I'm online... I have a shiny new version of Windows, some shiny Adobe programs, and enough of my older stuff to make me a very happy man indeed.
However, a couple of my old folders did seem to go kaputski... namely the ones that were open at the time of the big system crash. They were an inconsequential folder that I used for my setup files, and the NinDB site folder - which is more or less identical to the NinDB site online, so it is easily downloaded. The years of research and all that stuff is fine.
So, here's to a long and fruitful life with a happy new computer. May it give me many years of productivity and ebay auctions ;D

Good to learn that your drive is fine... actually it should be! And it's about time for you to have a habit of backing up your important files. Ever since a few months ago my drive has experienced a partition error due to an WINDOWS error, I started to backup so that Microsoft wont be harming me so much. And if Macromedia software goes to Linux, I'd have left Windows since long ago! Your new pc sucks balls. As for macs. Yes they crash. Yes they're very very nice. Well, enough cursing on that stupid Windows NT series. Congrats, anyways.
