On June 27th 2008, exactly one day before the 7th birthday of Nintendo Database (thanks for remembering, you buncha gits!!), Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released. The sequel to the reason this site was born and why you're all here today, annoying each other and throwing up the Todd whenever anyone says something smutty.
So it seems only fitting that I commented on the game really!
The game starts like any other... Smash Bros. game... that is, an epic score and a flood of highly polished Nintendo characters appearing in a quick-cut frenzy of action. If you weren't excited about the game, watch the opening and you will be.
The first weird thing is the Wii Remote doesn't seem to control the menus. That threw me immediately. It didn't make much difference, as after two battles I'd dumped the Remote-Nunchuk combo and gone back to the Gamecube controller again (much like I did with Mario Kart). Whether this is simply familiarity, or its actually just a better control system, I can't say. I played Melee a LOT.
Old characters control much as you remember them, but there's something weightier about how each of them moves and attacks. Some of the creases have been ironed out of Melee (Kirby's good again) while some new ones have been introduced (Mario sucks harder). I found myself gravitating towards old favourites, but some returning characters just seem to work better this time. Notably:
Captain Falcon was always OK, but now he's one of my favey characters.
Fox was one of my worst characters in 64 and Melee, but I find him a lot easier to use now.
Ice Climbers work better. They're still not great, but gotta love 'em anyway.
Mr. Game & Watch also works better now.
I haven't unlocked Jigglypuff yet, who was one of my fave characters, but not sure I want to if she's been buggered-up as much as everyone says she has.
New characters (so far) have been interesting, but I haven't warmed to many of them.
Pit is probably the best of the bunch so far. His Special Attacks aren't much to shout about, but he's speedy and can deal quite a bit of damage.
Wario is too jerky and weird. I can't get the hang of him.
Zero Suit Samus is actually quite powerful and reminds me a lot of Shiek, my fave Melee character.
Ike was a big surprise. I like him. Sure, he's slow, but I seem to do quite well with him.
Pokemon Trainer is OK, but I never want to use Ivysaur or Charizard. I would have just been happy with a playable Squirtle, to be honest
Diddy Kong is one of my favourite newcomers. He just works well. No gimmicks, no fuss, just runs in and attacks quickly. Great!
Meta-Knight seems to be OK for the Subspace Emissary, but I just can't get the hang of him in battle.
Snake is awesome. He's also daft. His Smash Attacks look like Special Attacks, and he's just... cool! His Recovery can be annoying though.
Lucas controls better than Ness. Which is great, as Ness is one character I have never been able to master since SSB64. Not one of my personal favourites, but a good character.
King Dedede is sloooow. So slow I seem unable to get any hits in without lobbing a million Waddle Dees at the opponent first.
Olimar... I just don't get it. Can't seem to do anything at all with Olimar. I'd probably pick Yoshi over Olimar
Lucario isn't bad. Certainly no Mewtwo... but not as bad as I thought.
ROB is frantic, but throws people all over the place. I quite like ROB, and I don't like fighting against ROB.
I haven't unlocked any other new characters yet, but I'm keen to try Wolf and... of course... Sonic.
The new Final Smash moves are... varied. More interesting to me was the Dragoon item, which appears with disturbing frequency and guarantees a 1-Hit KO. The Smoke Ball item is a bit rubbish, and I was expecting more of an explosion from the Gooey Bomb. New items don't impress-a me much.
The new stages are mostly too gimmicky. There's too much whooshing around and things moving away and spinning. Too many opportunities to fall down by accident.
The Subspace Emissary is an OK platform game with an excellent storyline. It's not great - but on a par with the majority of Kirby games out there. It's well-paced, the new enemies and bosses are actually quite well realised (they better be, you see them enough times!) and the stages are varied enough. Though I've never once used a sticker...
The trophy shooting gallery is more interesting than the lottery in Melee. The stage creator is a little disappointing. The trophy collecting is as awesome as ever. My Music is brilliant (Humoresque of a Little Dog was boosted up to top playback for New Pork City).
And the Brawls are... Brawls! What more can I say! Four Nintendo characters fight each other. One wins! It's awesome, as always!
Haven't been on wifi yet, as mine's down, but I can guarantee everyone will kick my ass due to the huge distance between release dates.
I am enjoying Brawl, and I've only just scratched the surface of the game. A lot of the problems with Melee were fixed, and Brawl has given us a whole host of new stuff to play with.
In short... Brawl is Excellent! Not perfect, but hey... we still have SSB4 to look forward to, right? ...Right!? ...Takamaru for SSB4...
