There are a couple cameos for Link's Awakening that you haven't added... Wizzrobe ResemblanceThe Wizzrobe looks a lot like the Black Mage from Final Fantasy... ThwompIn one of the sidescrolling areas in the Key Cavern, you will encounter a Thwomp that you need to ram with your Pegasus Boots so he'll fall. Mamu/WartThere is a character named Mamu who looks a lot like Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2. Coincidentally, Mamu is the Japanese name for Wart... Sale theCrocodileThere is a crocodile named Sale that is essential for completing the trading quest. If you give him dog food, he will give you bananas from his stash. This could be a reference to enemies in Donkey Kong. They were crocodiles, and they stole his bananas... SparkThere is an enemy named a Spark that looks a lot like Phanto's from Super Mario Bros. 2. Coincidentally, there was an enemy in Super Mario Bros. 2 called a Spark that performs in exactly the same way as the one in Link's Awakening... Link's Awakening Spark SMB2 Spark SMB2 Phanto

Link's Awakening was released in 1993, but Donkey Kong Country was in 1994. Or were there other banana stealing crocodiles before?

Well, if that was the case, Wizzrobe and Spark would have to be cameos in OoA and OoS also.

Someone said Sale looks like Croco in SMRPG. Dunno how, SMRPG came out in 96 and started in 03 so hmm. Prolly not, though.
Wizzrobes always look like Black Mages in 2D games after LttP. They're so cool cause of that.

I think the Black Mage thing is just some Japanese motif. Maybe.

Blimey! Have I not replied to this yet? How rude of me! Wizzrobe ResemblanceThe Wizzrobe looks a lot like the Black Mage from Final Fantasy... Or vice versa. The original Legend of Zelda was released over a year before the original Final Fantasy. On whether it's a Japanese motif - I have no idea on this one... It's possible the idea of wizards being shrouded in shadow under their hats is a motif... and it's been cartoonified as we see it here. ThwompIn one of the sidescrolling areas in the Key Cavern, you will encounter a Thwomp that you need to ram with your Pegasus Boots so he'll fall. Yup, can't argue with that! Can't believe it's not on the site. Mamu/WartThere is a character named Mamu who looks a lot like Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2. Coincidentally, Mamu is the Japanese name for Wart... This has been brought up a few times now, and it's another one I can't believe got missed from the site (there are a lot of cameos...) Sale theCrocodileThere is a crocodile named Sale that is essential for completing the trading quest. If you give him dog food, he will give you bananas from his stash. This could be a reference to enemies in Donkey Kong. They were crocodiles, and they stole his bananas... Nope. 1993 for Zelda, 1994 for Donkey Kong Country. Although I am still wondering if he's from somewhere else! SparkThere is an enemy named a Spark that looks a lot like Phanto's from Super Mario Bros. 2. Coincidentally, there was an enemy in Super Mario Bros. 2 called a Spark that performs in exactly the same way as the one in Link's Awakening... Link's Awakening Spark SMB2 Spark SMB2 Phanto I've never been sure about this. Sparks that travel around the perimeter of an area have been a videogame staple since the early arcade days (hell, Donkey Kong Jr. has sparks that travel perimeters). Given the entirely unoriginal names, I'm putting this down to coincidence.

It's just a generalized cartoon version of a mage shrouded in darkness. Americans do this too, so it's not only in Japan.

Aha! Very true! Well there we go then! Wizzrobe is an Orko cameo! ;D

I've figured that the Sparks are related, though perhaps indirectly. There are Fire Snakes that act the same way (and almost certain SMB cameo Fire Bars) in A Link to the Past, which was the primary basis for Link's Awakening. These Fire entities look like Lil Sparky/Hothead from Super Mario World (minus the eyes). And those enemies act the same way as the Sparks in SMB2, though they look nothing alike. But I guess it's hard to know whether they're true cameos or just enemy motifs.

I think because they have quite significantly different faces, I'm happier with the "motif" argument at the moment. I mean, why single out SMB2? Why not Donkey Kong Jr.'s sparks? It looks just as unlike them as any of the others.

Also there is a Bowser in one of Mario style platformers in Catfish Maw. Also in the desert there are pokey's.
