Some company came up with a general patent for something that sounded a bit like an analogue controller.
Meanwhile, Nintendo created the analogue controller for the N64.
Then the first company decided to make some money by suing Nintendo for patent infringement.
It's called "Patent Trolling" and is very common in America. Someone files a fairly vague patent with no intention of creating the item, waits for someone to actually invent it, then sues them.

But what about ever major controller past the N64? The dreamcast, PS2, X-box and others all use analogue controllers.... why doesn't this whatever company sue them as well?
For that matter... why doesnt' NINTNEDO ever sue when people steal their ideas?

They did sue Sony and Microsoft. Both settled out of court.

They do. Nintendo's quite litigious, it's just not heavily publicised. Although why they've targeted Nintendo rather than Sega, Sony or Microsoft is a mystery. I guess their budget only extends to suing one major international corporation.

Isn't this new one about that guy saying he thought up a Wii Remote style controller before they did? That's the latest one at the moment.
