At the very beginning of the game if you talk to one of the NPCs he'll explain the two control methods (button and touch). He'll say the following line: "As for me, I always use my stylus for getting around. You know, I’m from the “Touch Generation.”"
It's an obvious reference to Nintendo's Touch Generations line of games.
