Even though the two aren't best friends forever anymore, Rare still occasionally references their old partner, though now that they're with Microsoft the references have to be more subtle, no more system placements or blatant walk-on roles.
What prompted this thread were the references to the DKC series in the latest Viva Pinata game, Trouble in Paradise. The new ape-like Pinata the Sarsgorilla.
First, the game's journal entry on the Sarsgorilla:
"Here we go again, another video game with a big ape in it. Can someone explain to me why the guy who write games are so fascinated with really big apes?"
Right, not a big reference is it? But the one that'll make you smirk comes when you try to romance the Sarsgorilla. The first requirement is, that your Sarsgorilla is wearing a funky tie accessory.
Big Ape, wearing a funky tie, in a RARE game. I guess that's the closest they could get to a Donkey Kong reference now that they can't put the guy's mug in the game.
There's one more reference to the DKC series. One of the new toys you can buy for your Pinatas in a little Mine Cart. Already it's got gems and jewels in it seemingly taken from from the Banjo-Tooie game, but where you'll find the reference to DKC lies in it's description. It talks about how the Mine Carts were a popular mode of transportation back in the year 1994, and that pairs of Cinnamonkeys can'r resist hopping into the carts to this day.
There was one more game where I recently found more Nintendo related references. The less than well received Grabbed by the Ghoulies game actually had visual references to the characters rather than just text allusions. A painting of Fox McCloud suffering from severe lycanthropy (so much so you can't really tell it's Fox at first), a swordfish you can use as a weapon who can't not be a reference to Enguarde. And lastly a painting of one of Bottle's children from Banjo-Tooie who held a Donkey Kong doll way back when. They cut off half of the doll's body though, so again you'd have to know what you were looking at.
Anyway, that's it for now. With Nuts and Bolts on the way it'll be interesting to see what references Rare can sneak into the game. It's too bad there isn't one big directory of video game references and cameos out there, the new Viva Pinata game alone has a ton of Rare goodies, from Sabreman to a Battletoads accessory you can put on your Pinatas.
