For traditional Mario games, I definitely think the Super Mario Bros. 3 (original or All-Stars, they're much the same) is my favourite. Although taking all of the games, the Mario & Luigi games pretty much provide the best sprite work. The hilarious caricatures of popular characters, and the exaggerated animations really made the games stand out. Of course, Luigi was even better

I remember this appearing in an issue of the old NOM UK...funny, eh?
Anyway, I'm torn between the Mario All-Stars versions of SMB2 and SMB3 Mario. Because those are the ones I grew up with.
Athough, I'll admit that personally, I prefer Mario's polygonal model in SM64 than the flat 2D sprites (even though it is rough around the edges).

Mario and Luigi Parters in time, (I found that many of the Nes Mario sprites to be not as pretty as lets say Megaman, sure they are iconic, but If I were to remake the games, I will totally update them.)

I think I'd pick the Mario & Luigi sprites as well. But if I were to go straight platformers, I think SMB2 All-Stars has the best one.

I think it's, personally, SM all stars + World has the best one's. They are also rather flexible.

Super Mario World is my personal favorite. Man though, those early Atari/Intellivision/etc forms are terrible.

Being a sprite artist myself, I say i enjoyed Mario & Luigi the best. It's simple, fun, and can cover many grounds in an attractive scale.

World in terms of traditional platformers, but as others have said, M&L's are the best.

Seen the article before.
I could fave M&L/2/3 for being varied, but I am also a big fan of Paper Mario TTYD - said on the webpage those do't cound as sprites, but they are indeed 2D graphics. Nicely drawn 2D bitmaps. Shame they don't do vectors.
If they ever have 3D models ripped, converted and imported...

I'd probably go with the Paper series, myself - I love his victory poses. But, since they're not there, I'd lean toward SMB3's version.

Sprites? Hmm... well, I do like the M&L series the best, followed by SMW.

Well being a sprite artist, I like the Super Mario World and Mario & Luigi sprites. I also love the original Super Mario Bros sprites for nostalgic reasons.
