(Really odd to put a useless QUIT GAME feature in a SNES title, though I went and activated it once in a while thanks to the soothing music If it's there, then I'll use it. Sounds odd, but I usually return to the title screen before turning off games. Just to be extra sure that the game isn't writing anything to the save file.

Another one from me:
This game released in North America is a localisation of a Japanese game starring a ninja. The original protagonist was replaced by an advertising character of a U.S.-based company. Guess the game (American title is enough)!

Clue 1 - This spin-off from a major franchise became a monster in its own right, but it almost didn't become such a phenom due to the original design documents calling for a different cast of characters.
Guess the Game!

I'm not sure of my answer, so I'm just going to blurt this one out:

Nice guess, but that's not it, either.

I'll guess Super Smash Bros. I believe it was originally supposed to have samurai characters or something, but it's not really a spin-off of anything.

...I'm going wild and guess Kirby's Epic Yarn. It isn't that big of a hit outside of the Nintendo community, but is still hugely popular among Kirby fans. It was originally going to be something else, and since it's not exactly following the Kirby formula, it's a spinoff in some sense.
EDIT... Of course, that's unless when "in its own right" means becoming a standalone series instead, like Donkey Kong is separated from Mario. In that case, I can't think of anything... Portal came to mind, but even if it's not set in the Half-Life world, it'd still be popular.

Nester got it. I call it a spin-off for the reasons YL stated, but it may have been a poor choice of wording on my part. I consider it spinning off of Mario for some wacky reason.
