Found this while Brawling with my brother yesterday.
Start a round of training mode as Snake, and set your opponent to Mr. Game & Watch. Choose whatever level catches your fancy, but I recommend one that's easy to see with (like Battlefield or Isle Delfino) and set the camera into zoom. Then, as Snake, grab Mr. Game & Watch - and watch in amazement as G&W's framerate increases to match your standard character's. Not only that, but he'll shake his head back and forth, so you can get a sense of the depth of it as his mouth moves - it's pretty neat!
So far as I know, Snake is the only character that this glitch works with, but I only tried it with Pokemon Trainer aside from him.

I often believe Mr G&W is really a 3D figure "pressed and redisplayed" as 2D (or a really flat 3D figure in Melee), seeing how this technology is made available in the 2D stages in the series (and Paper Mario series as well if you count that).

The effect is also replicated in SM64DS via action Replay. This is very cool TEi.

Yeah I noticed that when I first played. Also during the use of the hammer there's clear movement in the wrist, at least in Melee.
It is a 3D model with Mario's movements flattened.

I remember that in Melee when G&W turns around while using the Hammer he turns all so smoothly aswell. Same whenever G&W was about to be thrown in 1 of 4 directions by someone else.
I think the reason he's all smooth when grabbed by Snake is because Snake's the only character who grabs characters, well, backwards. Guess they didn't bother giving G&W some low frame animation to go with that.

They probably didn't even think of doing that because it is too strange and not obvious giving him low frame animation.

Here's something neat, I actually got a picture of it. If you pause with Mr. G&W wearing a badge (mine was the Franklin Badge) and turn the camera so that he gets flat to it, you'll see that the badge is floating.
