One of the cool things about For The Frog The Bell Tolls (kaeru no tame ni kane wa naru) is that the place names all seem to be named after desserts, largely French ones.
Sablé Kingdom (your kingdom)
Sablé (SAH-blay) is a crumbly biscuit from the Caen province of Normandy.
Custard Kingdom (Prince Richard's kingdom)
Custard is obvious, although the recipe (and word) is of English origin. Dessert custard is known in France as crème moulée. This could be intentional. We know the hero and Richard are rivals, which is also true of the English and French.
Mille-Feuille Kingdom (where the game takes place)
Mille-Feuille (Mil-Fey) is a layered pastry with a decorative icing layer. It is more commonly known as Napoleon Cake.
Éclair Palace (the central castle of the game)
Éclair (eh-clair) is a cream-filled pastry or bun.
Á La Mode (a town East of Éclair Palace)
A widely-used French phrase mainly used to mean "with ice cream".
Mt. Bavarois (where Mandola the witch lives)
The Bavarois (Bavarian Cream) has long been credited to the French master chef Marie-Antoine Carême, although it is believed to have originated in Switzerland. It is a chilled cream, thickened with gelatin.
Meringue Glacier (a snowy land in the North)
Meringue is a dessert made from whipped egg whites and sugar, and commonly accompanies other desserts.
Lake Syrup (a frozen lake)
There's nothing particularly French about syrup, but a sugary or flavoured syrup usually accompanies desserts.
Tart Plateau
A tart is an open-top pie pastry. Also your mum is one.
A number of characters and other items are named for French desserts or other dishes. So it's definitely a solid running theme. However, there's a handful of locations where I can't work out a connection, and I'm hoping you guys can help:
Port Shiimizu (the port where you land in the kingdom)
Gerobeppu Spa (a spa town that specialises in mysterious eggs)
Spring Hill (a port town where a mysterious bell is found)
Kuroza Island (an island in the West, home of Nantendo)
Fuurin (a devastated volcano town)
I have used the original Japanese spellings for the above (except for Spring Hill), as I'm unsure how to "Frenchify" them. Spring Hill is just unclear.
If you're able to help with any of them, please let me know!
