While I haven't let go of my gallery (on hold due to lack of a working scanner and a lot of other stuff going on, and simply a mere spare-timer anyway), I've recently set myself onto another extra engaging project to bring about. So now with what I've got ready this time, what better way than to use many of these Nintendo characters all together in a comic-format story!  Inspired largely by SSE and partly by Captain N and (to an even slighter extent) the old Mario cartoons and the Kirby anime, this Nintendo comic is called "Nintendo Power Hour" featuring many Nintendo heroes, villains, and other characters in the same setting going about in various antics. I have always been itching to bring forth an all-out story involving Nintendo's characters like this. Now, I've told some of you all about it before, but after some consideration (and talk about this kind of thing in TEi's "second wind" topic in the Smash board), I've decided that this was now topic enough to post here, mainly to inform the rest of you about it. While this topic is simply an FYI about it at this point, this thing is currently in the first few stages of progress: I'm actively writing out the scripts to each chapter (nowhere online) before actually getting to fleshing it out as a comic. Some extra tidbits about NPH include: - Minor, obscure characters popping up a lot and being emphasized much, much more than before.
- Struggling to keep in touch with the way these characters have usually been. (A select few though, wherever and whenever necessary, will have some totally different directions taken with them! If Smash Bros. can do that with Captain Falcon, ROB, etc. etc.)
- Anyone who couldn't totally make it into the story will suffice as a simple cameo or two. (With that vast a multitude of characters at their disposal...)
And then there are some series that I would love to work into this comic, but I have very little to no expertise in them (to name a few: Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Earthbound...). Anyone who is an expert on them, help would be appreciated (I'll get to you on that later). In the meantime, feel free to ask about certain characters (and groups/teams thereof) and their roles in the story or anything about NPH in general. Afterward, I'll probably post in here some of the various scenarios and character roles that are planned for it (with "Who's Who" posts). The first few chapters are set in stone, while everything else onward is assorted and unordered. Help on anything I don't know about and adding onto what's done is welcome. EDIT: I've put this on hold for a while, but I'm lately slowly getting back into the writing process. |

I'll help with the MOTHER series if need be. I'm not to specialized in other obscure areas though. I could probably help with NES era stuff though.

Boo...I like your idea. The crossover and concept is a good one. You definitely have what it takes to write this. ...but the artwork....I....I hate to sound like a snob...but your artwork is abysmal.  I could be your artist if you like. I won't charge nothin'.  |

Well, these were pretty damn rushed, I'll tell you that much... I haven't even drawn anything in months either, need to get my touch back. I've done a lot worse years ago, tbh. But at least you were honest there, I'll give you that.  So I have what it takes to write this, you say? That's a good one to hear; I never was a good writer before. But I've recently been working on that. And as for the last part: depending on what's up, that could work. |

First thing I'd like to point out is that fancy Photoshop coloring has nothing to do with actual drawing ability. Second, you're right about losing one's touch and drawing without a reference, but what you seem to lack is general comprehension of form and structure. The potential is there but your sense of proportion is waaay off.  |

Man-Frogs right. A comic can go only so far, and the proportions are crazy out of whack.
For instance, Wario on the first page has different sized arms and legs, and Daisy's arm is a little weird.
Just some constructive criticism to think about. This was all actually brought up to jigglysama recently, so he took a break from drawing and researched other people's artwork, which I think he's still doing.

Glad you elaborated on that. Good points and well made, and I do agree. For the most part, it seems I come off fine with most characters (though not all), but proportions and the right form (a lot moreso in backgrounds) have been my weakest point. I'm not sure about it with someone like Wario, but it's more like the backgrounds and anything related to them that are abysmal in these. With that in mind, I've started working on that.
Obviously, this thing won't totally come about anytime soon, as I'm writing it out more of it. So I'll take this time to do that and better up with these faults. I might let you in on what I have of what's written so far...

I'd say the opposite is true, actually. Backgrounds aren't vastly important to a comic story. For example, most Japanese comics only really even have backgrounds when establishing location or having characters interact with their surroundings. What you really need to work on is the way you're drawing the characters. Not just the detail of the characters themselves, but the proportion and anatomy of them. I hate to be harsh, but these drawings are similar to the kind of drawings I was doing when I was 7... which isn't a particularly bad thing, as it's part of the learning process, but... I've been looking at your art for over a year now, and I haven't seen much improvement, or any real will to improve. And artists always have to push to improve, no matter how good they are. Here's some advice, and I'm going to use Fryguy as an example, since I love his stuff. Check this out. See all those sketchy circles and things? Do that. Everything is made of shapes, and once you figure out the shapes that make up a character, you can easily put them together from any angle and have them look like real, solid characters rather than stretchy spaghetti men. |

As with all things, getting better is simply a matter of practice. All artists look back at their old stuff and think "bleurgh!", even if it's actually really good. That's what drives us to get better. If you think something is good enough, then you're not cut out to be an artist.
That aside, if you want to improve quickly, then learning form, especially for animated characters, is the most important thing you can do. You've probably drawn a character in some point that just "worked", but you couldn't put your finger on why, or replicate it. That'll be because you accidentally got the form right.
Perspective is going to be hugely important if you're planning on doing comic panel scenes like this. Even I'm still working on this one, and I haven't even made an attempt to get better at backgrounds.
In fact, I'm only just getting hands and feet down, and I've been drawing regularly for nearly 20 years! So there's always something that needs work. Recognising that in yourself and practising in order to fix it are both important.
And when drawing official characters, always use references... or else you risk missing important details.
Inking and colouring don't fix bad artwork, they just make it stand out more. You have to be happy with your sketch before going near it with a pen or Photoshop, etc. Erasers are your friend!

For me, the skecthes do look pretty average. But you know, my sis's been complaining that her pictures are very detailed, but don't tell too much and also take a lots of time.  When seeing this sketch of mine, she became pretty suprised- I made this sketch in less than a hour: using Gyromite sprites and Muddy Mole Official Art as references, but keeping also my style in hand. I'm having a half-done lineart of this sketch, too. Not too detailed, but it's a success! Like FryGuy said, Perspective is ideal to be learned well, and also use references if you don't remember characters well. + important details seen. (-lwl-) But I'll be definitely in! I haven't been writing anything good since 5 months, but I'm more talented as a writer, and I'm having a lots of ideas for obscure-character crossovers. (Wants to see Alice The Balloon Kid) Maybe I'll also sketch something for this project. (-lwl-) Kirbychu: Wow. I'll try that too. Really. (-lwl-) That must really make my drawings more easier. (-^^-) And for everyone. |
