It's worth experimenting, but I think you can't in the original because that's the same total distance than in the cross-shaped pit I mentioned before (located 3 screens to the north and 2 to the east of the entrance). And IIRC, that was only possible because between floors and pits, Link struggles to not fall, while between floors and water, Link immediately sinks. Not 100% sure now that you mention the tile being missing in DX, but that's what I'd wager ^_^

Maybe a dash-jump could be just about achieved. I imagine once the bug was brought to their attention they had their testers going at it from every angle.
I'm sure I made that jump once, but I didn't have the key, so I didn't do it again...
