I was looking through this article the New York Times here. Item number 6 is a the hand free controller or HFC. The controller was meant for physically disabled players. They could where it like a vest. A straw acted as the A and B buttons by blowing into it or sucking on it. The D-Pad was done using a chin-fitting joystick. The article says nothing about the start or select buttons. The HFC was sold as a non-profit item and could only be ordered through the customer service line. It was sold separately for $120 or bundled with a NES and a game for $179.

I read about this in an old book about games of the NES era. It mentions it received an approval by the National Spinal Cord Injury Association. To input Start or Select, it's the same as with A or B, just stronger. Here's an article about it.

Interesting. The controller in the second scan must have been a prototype. Now I have to wonder if they ever made a similar controller for any other systems. With all the extra buttons, it seems like it'd be difficult, at least if they did it the same way.

So, say if in SMB you had to run and jump to the right, essentially requiring you to hold B and Right and press A... Surely you'd need some pretty weird lungs to pull that off. And what was the point of playing NES if you couldn't play Mario?

If I'm not mistaken, quick changing would accomplish the same goal.

If I'm not mistaken, quick changing would accomplish the same goal. I believe I've tried that and was unable to reach the top of the flag or jumping long pits for example.

And what was the point of playing NES if you couldn't play Mario? TABOO THE SIXTH SENSE DAMMIT To be more on-topic, there was an article at GoNintendo talking about Wii prototypes...ah, here we go. Kind of interesting. I was thinking about getting the book these images and text came from, and if it has a few more tidbits like this in it, I may have to consider it more.
