This is more of a preemptive measure than anything else, so we can cover any cameos/throwbacks in SMG2. WAHOO! The big throwback right now is the Throwback Galaxy, which is based on Whomp's Fortress from Super Mario 64 and SM64DS, which has all sorts of cameothings. Throwback Galaxy- The return of King Whomp. He uses the same dialogue, to the letter, that he had in Super Mario 64.
- Red Bob-ombs return and make the same sound effect when you talk to them.
- Stage music is a remix of the Super Mario 64 Main Theme, which was used in the original Whomp's Fortress.
This is all I've got based on gameplay videos of the level. I haven't gotten that far myself, and I'm sure once I get there I'll find more. CONTRIBUTE!

I think Whomp's Fortress was a perfect choice of levels to pull from SM64 into Galaxy 2, myself. That's all I have to add onto the discussion now, as the game will be in my hands well after everyone else has it here, I'm sure.

I am sure you guys have already seen the video of Rolling Coaster Galaxy in the other Super Mario Galaxy 2 thread. It really looks a lot like the original Rainbow Road from Super Mario Kart on the SNES. Would that count as a cameo?

The fact the Super Mario 64 slide music returns in the Rolling Coaster Galaxy? The Mario World ghost house music returns in the Haunty Halls Galaxy? The remix of the Bowser's Road music in Bowser's levels?
The Shadow Mario music from Sunshine is remixed for the Cosmic Clone missions.

I think Fry said cross-series cameos for Mario count, so this one should.

Oh yes, and when a door opens in the first planet on Boo Moon Galaxy, it makes the classic "door opening" noise from Super Mario World. You know, the "Rrt-rrt-rrt!" grunty thing.

The amount of Super Mario World content is amazing. For a long time, it felt like that was the oddball of the series, well remembered but little referenced beyond Yoshi. Now how many enemies aren't back? Four, five? Few songs too.

Just played through a star in the Slipsand Galaxy where you ride on a raft made of chunks of sand that looks like the sand bird from Super Mario Sunshine.

But that was crammed with SMB3 stuff. ;D Are the Koopas in Galaxy 2 still NES-style walk-on-all-fours Koopas, or have they gone back to SMW-style ones?

No, they still crawl on the ground. I'm up to World 5, and I've only seen a single Koopa, so they look to be in shorter supply this time around.

So if SMG1 was the new SMB3 and SMG2 is the new SMW....then what's next?

Speaking of Koopas... Semi-spoiler: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUXDvsfxUhQI don't know if cameos from 2D Mario games in a 3D Mario game counts, but this is cool regardless. (argh, getting sandwiched in the middle of a changed direction of topic... anyway)

Possibly....but Yoshi in SMG2 already has everything covered save for egg-throwing, which I think might be redundant given the way his tongue works.
