This is from a recent Nintendo shareholder's meeting, June 29. Sounds like we can expect a new character/new IP from good'ole Miyamoto maybe next year. www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/07/01/miyamoto_new_character/“It’s about time for a new game character. Perhaps this can be delivered next year.”www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/07/01/miyamoto_q_and_a/I think that next year I can probably deliver something new. I’m still active on the development scene, so please look forward to [my output]. It’s been nearly 10 years since I made the Pikmin character (Olimar), so I feel this is the year where I must at long last make a new character. This is as far as I’ll answer today.”Speaking of Pikmin, Miyamoto also mention a little about how he wants to be done with Pikmin 3 fast. "Amongst the present promises, I have to finish Pikmin quickly, so production is progressing extremely well."Looking forward to see what he will bring to the table with this new game. He said before he would like to make a mature game. I wonder if he still would go for that, not Eternal Darkness or Geist mature like but something like...ehhh, Detective Club? I don't know why I brought it up but that series is the only mature-themed game series fully developed by Nintendo all by themselves that I know of. NOTE: I don't know much about Miyamoto's role in Eternal Darkness or Geist, all I heard is that he lend a very big hand in those two games in some form. Feel free to explain to me what he exactly did.

He also comments that swimming is a new hobby . . . New IP confirmed to involve swiming!

Well, that could be pretty vague, nearly every game bar Donkey Kong Country Returns to date has swimming included in some form...
But Wii Swimming! Now with motion controls for mimmicking different strokes!
Or, considering how the article was going, maybe a guidance counselling game. Whatever that would entail.

Well, he doesn't ALWAYS apply his hobbies to every game he makes. (It's just part of his lifestyle, nothing more.) Way too much of a stretch there, no?

Miyamoto likes to make games about his hobbies and interests. Perhaps his next project could be a videogame about making videogames? What's that? DAMN YOU WARIOWARE DEVELOPMENT TEAM!!

How about... a video game, about making video games about making video games? Or a video game about making games based on your hobbies?
Well, maybe they're not that desperate.

(Just a note, we have no clue whether or not DKCR has swimming or not.)
If Miyamoto's putting out a new IP, I expect it to be pretty good. He does good work. The one thing I have to question, though, is what we'll be seeing. He mentions the desire to make a mature game, which makes me think it'll be something like Majora's Mask with blood. This could mean anything, of course, but since we're dealing with Miyamoto, I'm pretty sure we'll not be getting GTA.

The costumes seemed like a good idea at first.

Somehow I doubt it's going to deal too directly with swimming.... If it is going to have any element of swimming, it will probably be based on some non-human creature. Perhaps Nintendo's version of Ecco the Dolphin?

Miyamoto making a "mature" game? I'm assuming this means something closer to Brain Age than Halo.

Miyamoto isn't much of a character creator these days, rather a strictly gameplay creator. So he'll probably come up with the gameplay idea and the other team members will make the hero you play as.
What? No one mentioned characters? Never mind then...

Miyamoto mentioned characters. He wants to create a new game character tied to a new IP. I guess the last one he had a major hand in creating was Captain Olimar.
He'll create the game mechanics, then he'll create a character to fit within those mechanics. Then pump it full of childlike charm.

Yeah, when I imagine a "mature" Miyamoto concept, it definitely doesn't involve guns and swearing. I'd imagine something more story driven, something with enough depth to draw in the older audience.
Then again, look at the storylines (or increasing lack thereof) in recent Mario games!

I can see Miyamoto making "mature" to mean "noir," like a detective game with a gritty style but on the whole accessible/wholesome.
Games like Trace Memory, Shenmue, and Hotel Dusk come to mind. Also the Advance Wars for DS comes to mind as far as style's concerned. Definitely nothing like L.A. Noire, but not "cute" like Professor Layton either.
Edit: not saying it IS a detective game, but that sort of "mindset" is what might be kinda awesome in a mature Miyamoto game. It's not about action or a new gameplay mechanic, but the idea of the story and the experience with a realistic backdrop.

Or perhaps he's referring to a game with a dark story-line. You know, Majora's Mask-styled maturity. Again, definitely a reasonable level of maturity for Miyamoto-san, but I do point out that there is the question of whether or not he'd be big on having much story, since it's Miyamoto-san as opposed to Aonuma-san or Sakurai-san.
This post was brought to you by the suffix "-san." "-San." It's Mister in Japanese!
