The GameCube, I think, deserved a far better life than it got. It was derided for its lackluster game library, goofy case, etc.
Here's some facts, including why it did poorly, but potential.
1. It was released after September 11th. After 9/11, the economy immediately started to weaken. This was a primary cause for a weak release in Japan.
2. It shipped too close to the Xbox. Unlike the situation in 2006, the GameCube shipped too close after the Xbox without a cool library to prove it. I mean, Luigi's Mansion was okay, but it wasn't anything compared to the launch title of Xbox (Halo: Combat Evolved) or the Nintendo 64 (Super Mario 64)
3. There wasn't a great Mario title. I mean, Super Mario Sunshine was no SM64, and it shipped a year too late (compare Super Mario Galaxy, which was worth it)
4. Rare wasn't up to snuff. It only had one game out by 2002: StarFox Adventures, and the offerings for the original Xbox weren't impressive either.
5. The SD card attachment was not released in USA or PAL. The SD card could've been a really inexpensive way to bring the power of the DD (expandable games) to the next generation.
6. There was untapped potential. I mean, it had a high-speed port (used for the um, Game Boy Player) and a modem port, but nothing was ever used. Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II used the modem, and some games used LAN play, but nothing else ever used it. The Hi-Speed Port could've been used for a DVD player or backwards compatibility. But no!
7. It was more powerful than the PS2.
What do you think about the GameCube? Should it have had a better life, or was it doomed to be doomed?
