Hey guys, sorry if it's not supposed to be asked here, I didn't see any general Mario discussion. Anyways, I really want to check out Mario but I don't know what game to begin with. The old games won't appeal to me that much after playing 3D games and considering I won't have any nostalgic value towards those I guess. I thought about either Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy, both look like fun games. I'm mostly into a game which I can understand the whole concept and plot of Mario from. What's your opinion? -------------------------- R4 3DS cardr4 dsM3 3DS

1) Ignore that belief that the 2D titles won't appeal to you after the 3D games. The 2D Mario games have vastly different gameplay from the 3D titles in more ways than just a lost dimension. 2) Mario as a series has minimalist plot linearity, meaning that no two games are related outside of having the same characters. 3) Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Galaxy are three games NO ONE should skip. I cannot emphasize that enough. I've never played 64 to make a judgment call on it. The original SMB is also really fun, bare-basics gameplay. SMB2 and Sunshine are really the black sheep, so I'd give them a pass early on in the series.
Anything else you'd like to know?

Shrikes...you've never played Mario 64? Damn.
Okay, I say start with Mario World. It has more recurring characters in it the any other Mario that comes to mind, so if story's your thing, start there.

Waitwaitwaitwaitwait!!!!
Start with SUPER MARIO BROS. The very game that started the FRANCHISE.
PS: Wow, you're the first (presumably) longtime gamer I've ever seen that was a complete newcomer to Mario. What have you been playing instead for all these years?

You can NOT skip the 2D Marios. You just can't. They are not inferior in any way and do not feel "restricted" by being in 2D. They are a different style of gameplay entirely.
My suggestion would be just play them in order. Not necessarily all of them, but you should play these games:
Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. 3 Super Mario World Super Mario 64 Super Mario Galaxy New Super Mario Bros. Wii
SMB is basically the most important game ever made, so you should play it just to see what it's about. You can find the shortcuts in a couple levels and beat the game by playing I think 8 levels. This is not looked down upon. It is awesome.
SMB3 might be the hardest game in the series, but part of that is down to elements outside of the levels themselves, including the fact that there isn't a save system. But the levels themselves are probably the best in the series. It is basically the beginning of the Mushroom Kingdom as we know it. I really wish I could play the levels of SMB3 with the save system and map/powerup systems of SMW or NSMBW.
If you get Super Mario All-Stars, you can save your game after each world in SMB and SMB3.
SMW introduced Yoshi. Most arguments about the best Mario game come down to SMB3 and SMW.
SM64 is easily the best of the 3D games. It is just more replayable than the others. The stages are small, but a lot of them are wide open, and you can just run around and find stars in a free-form way. But it's a totally different beast than 2D Mario and can't be played instead of 2D Mario.
The levels in Galaxy are very linear compared to SM64. In fact, even though it sounds weird, the levels feel more linear than the 2D Marios. But the levels are awesome, and it has without doubt the best music in the series. I actually beat the game twice, but now I find it hard to replay the game because the levels are mostly scripted, and I've seen them already.
NSMBW actually lives up to SMB3 and SMW, but doesn't surpass them. The sad part is that it rehashes a lot from those games and doesn't have the production levels of Galaxy. But the levels are again, amazing, and the multiplayer is a lot of fun if you have easygoing people to play with. I would still rate this over any 3D Mario, and actually might rank it #1 overall due to the multiplayer.
And btw, this all comes from a person who started with Mario 64 and then Mario Galaxy before any 2D Mario. I got a Super NES in probably 1995 or 96, and played the Donkey Kong Country games, and after that Nintendo discarded 2D games for 10+ years. Going back and playing all the 2D Marios before I got NSMBW was BLISS.

Shrikes...you've never played Mario 64? Damn. It came out when I was 6, and my father was fazing out of gaming at the time. I really got into gaming after the GCN had been out a while (though before I owned it,) so when I started making gaming decisions, no one stocked it. This is true of many big name N64 games. I mean, hell, I've stated before that I hadn't played OoT until I downloaded it to my Wii. I own every main series SMB game in some form with only 5 exceptions: SML2, SM64, SMG2, New SMB DS, and New SMB Wii. I do not own any game with "Yoshi" or "Wario" in the title, and only own DKC1 for the Kongs' main adventures, to summarize the Mario universe games I own.

With the exception of Super Mario World, you just listed all my favourite titles in the series. Including Yoshi's Island and Wario Land.

I was 12 when the game first hit the shelves. Anyway, in response to galen: That said, this is a day late and a dollar short (I've been occupied with other things), but what the others said about Mario games having minimalist plots is correct. My personal recommendation is to start with Super Mario World and Super Mario 64. It's really important to start with SM64 if you're going to follow through with the 3D end of the series, since it sets the grounds for what you can expect from those to come after. Also, welcome to the board.

The concept of Mario as it is today is most clearly expressed in New Super Mario Bros. on DS for 2D, and Super Mario Galaxy on Wii for 3D.
There isn't really a plot beyond "save the princess". Any other major plot elements change from game to game, so don't worry about that. Plot isn't what the Mario games are about.
Alternatively, if you honestly want to get into the series properly then you have to start from the beginning with Super Mario Bros. and work your way through the main games in order of release in order to appreciate how they have evolved over time.
