Your theory falls flat: The DK franchise has a nostalgia-driven fanbase capped by very few others. The problem actually arises because its main series is defined by a simple core of 5 games (the Country trio, DK64, and Returns) and a bunch of oddballs (Jungle Beat, Konga, Barrel Blast, KoS.) From DK64 to Returns, the DK franchise didn't have a steady dev team, since Rare's last main-series game was DK64 before the Stamper Bros. and Nintendo sold Rare to Microsoft. After that, we ended up with wierd turns for the franchise. The KoS series was the successor to DK64, but the wierd mechanics left a bad taste in gamers' mouths, while Jungle Beat was just DK off doing something else. With drums. A standard, DKC platformer was called for, a game like Returns. Will the Returns style be permanent? Can't tell, it's too new.
The Mother series has 3 games total, all of which are main series and totally devoid of wierd gameplay. How many DK games exist, barring Mario games? Between DK64 and Returns were over 11 years of spin-offs and wierd, unsuccessful descendants. That's a long gap. Sure, it's not Kid Icarus or Mother long, and we got stuff in between, but it was the DKC Dork Age. We were accidentally given total CRAP. Notice how everyone cheered to see DK swingin' vines at E3? Think real quick: How many vines preceded it since DK64? Not as many as one would hope. As a stalwart fan I can't remember DK in the swing of things since DK64.
I theorized it's because characters these days have to be one of four things to be loved: "cute" "cool" "badass" or "nostalgic"
It's a bit of.... generalizing too much. Also, define these terms please.
Right now I can't think of a single fictional character that possesses none of the first three. As for nostalgic, I'd say not really. Not everything in the past that haven't shown up in, say a few years, are automatically good.
A good counterexample, I'd say, is Mario. He is badass in my book, but some would say otherwise, especially if you look at just his appearance and some of his basic moves. Regardles, he's hugely popular.
Is he cute? I wouldn't use that to describe him (although he doesn't look bad either). Is he cool? He doesn't have that kind of detached, aloof personality, nor does he look calm and quiet. Is he nostalgic? Not if there are more Mario stuff than ever now compared to the NES days. For a simple exercise, count how often a Mario game comes out now compared to the 1985~1991 period.
So is it true that if you don't think Mario is badass you wouldn't like him?
I dunno, whenever I look at Rare's old DKC renders, they seem like a pretty obvious attempt to make him appear "cool":
Of course, ever since Rare was sold off they kinda went back to making DK look goofy:
I think this may have affected people's perception of the current DK character, since this is the way he was depicted during the arcade era. It also doesn't help that most of DK's appearances in the past 10 or so years have been as a side character in Mario games, where he typically acts like a goofy foil rather than a capable protagonist.
Don't forget that Mother 3 was a Japan-only release. If you just take Japanese sales into account, overall Mother 3 sold around the same amount as Mario & Luigi and Golden Sun. Then consider the fact that Mother 3 was released for the GBA about a year and a half after the DS came out. It sold really well against those odds.

nocturnal YL: My current plan is to play Atelier Firis DX now, which online guides suggest is long. Atelier Lydie & Suelle DX will likewise be long (longer than the original too, due to DLC, DX additions and I'll make the best items). I'll maybe play Ys Origin after.

nocturnal YL: Not sure about what I'll play after. Another Atelier game will probably be out by then, either completing the Secret series or giving us Arland 5. Either way, I'll probably play those before going elsewhere. Dusk will have to wait for quite a bit…

Nester the Lark: Wondering if I should get Mario Golf at launch or wait a couple of months. I have so many other things to play that my gaming (and wallet) might need a little breathing room.

Nester the Lark: The problem with playing Hyrule Warriors and a modern Ys game at the same time is that even though the combat feels somewhat similar, the controls are completely different, and I get confused.

Shrikeswind: Yeah I'm here, but kinda vaguely. Sorry, I haven't had too much to say lately.

Shrikeswind: By the way, I don't know if you guys have been keeping up with OCR on YouTube, but apparently they're dropping an album for a game I grew up on, Jet Force Gemini. Really pumped; I'll post a review when they finish.

Shrikeswind: Or at least when my Top 3 from that game are on the Toobz. Just one more song to go.

Nester the Lark: I feel like I've been neglecting the forum more than usual lately. Been distracted by other things. I'll try to post something when I get the chance.

nocturnal YL: I don't have time to make posts. Atelier Firis DX takes forever to play. When I'm not playing, I'm in a read-only mode, reading guides and watching (unrelated) videos.
Jul 17, 2021 13:25:38 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: On that note, I'll probably make a review on the whole trilogy, so it will be a while until I talk about these games in details here. I can say Atelier Firis DX has far exceeded my expectation and has taken over Totori as my 3rd fav.
Jul 17, 2021 13:31:06 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: Uh, I take that back. Atelier Firis has a lot of merits, but also a lot of drawbacks. It's extremely tedious for 100% completion, and there are all kinds of other flaws. Still good for the exploration aspect and certain plots like Liane's character events.
Aug 9, 2021 13:38:12 GMT -5
nocturnal YL: I don't know where I'd place it. A bit above Atelier Totori? A bit below it? I still think it's pretty good, at any rate. If only they could keep this game's engine but dial back its scale and make a traditional Atelier. Totally not foreshadowing anything.

Nester the Lark: I've finished Ys IX, so I'll be working on a detailed write-up and comparison with Ys VIII.

Spud: I try to keep up with here, but the proboard RSS feed suuuucks. And Thunderbird is barely passable as a feed aggregator. I feel like the internet was just better in 2007.

Nester the Lark: I may have a little time to catch my breath...

nocturnal YL: Game progress update: Atelier Lydie & Suelle DX — defeated Falgior, so it's about 1/3 done (about 1/4 if I count post-game item grinding); WarioWare: Get It Together! — played up to the staff credits (about 5%, I guess).

nocturnal YL: This pic is how I'd rate my games on Nintendo Switch so far (subject to change). Numbers are meant to show relative positions; like temperatures in °C and °F, absolute values don't mean much.
