Now before I start I just want to say that I don't intend this to be - in any way - a replacement to Super Smash Bros. This is just a concept I've been thinking about that I think could easily be just as successful.
Let's say that Nintendo, one day, creates a Smash spinoff called Mario Smash Bros. that features this cast (or a variation of it).
It would not only cover the usual alumni, but characters from Mario universe history. Of course, the starting roster will pick the most important characters that could possibly be playable, alongside some classic ones that serve a more historical purpose.
Story
The game could have a single player mode where it follows a story that takes place after every Mario game in existence. So you see characters in their prime, like Donkey Kong right after he defeated the tikis. Geno right after he helped destroy Smithy. Mario right after he destroyed Bowser...yet again. All of these characters (at least, the non-defeated ones) are at their prime.
The dialogue could be written by Intelligent Systems in the style of the Paper Mario games. However, not only they are involved, but Yoshiaki Koizumi is too...
If you don't know, this man is responsible for creating the Zelda lore and is working on mainline Mario games today. He's the reason for the Rosalina backstory in Super Mario Galaxy. I think he'd be the perfect story director and/or scenario designer.
Art Style
All of the character art is rendered in the same style as the Strikers games to keep a consistent quality that gives a very, fighting-game like feel to it, almost like the art for Street Fighter IV. I feel this would be also a good way to express characters from Mario games that have drastically different art styles and could give a consistent look for everyone. Normally when you put Geno and Mona next to each other, they don't really fit, so you can of have to do this to make the characters seem natural together.
Characters
Aside from the characters in the top image, there could be all sorts of characters in the storymode ranging from bosses (that otherwise can't normally be playable) to just characters exclusive to the story that just weren't very important to the game itself.
Like, say, for example Count Bleck and his crew could be in the story but you only fight Dimentio.
Or characters like Pauline that don't really have the ability to fight, but still hold a certain importance to the series.
And then there's the characters that are simply "too big" as a lot of people put it with Ridley:
Sometimes I feel above characters are better as bosses anyway.
Gameplay
Pretty much this.
But let's say, instead of just the normal Smash gameplay, it had some extra features.
What if it had these moves, but for every character in the entire game?
Like the ability to do team up moves with Geno and Mallow, or Bowser and Bowser Jr.
All of the items would be from Mario lore too. Not only items like the above, however, but items like these too:
What do I mean by this? Well I mean actual power-up items like you see in Mario games. You won't be using the Fire Flower like you do in the Smash Bros. games..no, once you get the item you turn into a fire centric version of the character.
All of the power-ups from the series could appear and be applicable to every character in the game.
Anyway that's my idea. Would anyone else like to see something like this?
