Here's a tasty little morsel of information I received in my Inbox regarding Kazumi Totaka.
Hi. In some recent internet drudging, I've found a couple more games that Mr. Totaka is credited on that are not on any list of Totaka's Song possibilities: F-1 Race (Game Boy, 1990) and Tetris & Dr. Mario (SNES, 1995). Neither game has credits, but of all places the Canadian Copyright Office asks for staff lists in its submissions, which Nintendo has gladly provided since 1992 or so. Unfortunately, they don't indicate what capacity he was involved (could have been just sound programming or sound direction) but both games list him, and the music in each clearly shows his influence. Here's the links to the actual entries:

("Kazumi Todaka" is a romanization error by the agent who submitted the listing...not too uncommon with these unfortunately.)
I don't have any idea where the song might be in either of these games -- a quick listen through the music rips didn't turn anything up -- but I just wanted to put them forward as possibilities. Hopefully someone with a bit more patience than I can route them out.
Interestingly, if it does turn up in F-1 Race, that would displace X as the earliest game containing it.

This is interesting. Of course, after Mario Paint being the earliest known appearance for so long, it would be a shame to depose X from its place on the throne
But nevertheless... Let's check 'em out!
