We all know about the big Donkey Kong Jr. Math statue, the statue wearing Billy Mitchell's tie and the Donkey Kong Jr. music remix in DKC Returns...
But there are LOADS of references to the early Donkey Kong games in DKC Returns. Stones, statues and pillars with girders, barrels and classic style DK faces.
I'd like to get together a list of stages and what DK Arcade elements appear in them. Anyone else up for this?

In the K-Levels there are many cameos. Some more than others.
-At the beginning and end of every K-Level there are pillars that have drawings of girders and ladders from the Donkey Kong Arcade.
-In 1-K: Platform Panic, Springboard patterns appear on some of the platforms.
-In 3-K: Shifty Smashers, there springboards, flaming oil barrels, hammers, and Arcade DK himself engraved on all the smashers.

Level 7-1, Foggy Fumes, with the DK girder arrangement in the background.

Not really a DK arcade game, but has anyone brought this up? In Foggy Fumes, there's a worker fixing pipes in the background. Highlight this sentence to know it's...Mr. Game & Watch.

Some more (possible) cameos and "interesting" references from TV Tropes.Cameos - In the beach levels there are crab enemies that scuttle sideways along the ground. Ground pound near them and they'll flip over - ground pound again and they'll flip over again, unlike most enemies with stay stunned. Like the crabs in Mario Bros. - You can also see fossilized Infant Leviathans* from Metroid Prime 3 in the cliff level Tippy Shippy.. Metroid Wiki has nice pictures of them * Or possibly some sort of parasite from the Prime series. - The Volcano Vibe theme also sounds very similar to the Magmoor Caverns theme. (but than again it was composed by the same guy). Other stuff. (Not really cameos?) While the Donkey Kong playing with a DS for a idle animation is already known on the site, After a while he gets bored and tosses it casually over his shoulder. This may or may not have been inspired by a famous incident (Retro Studios took note of it on their website) wherein a kid dropped his DS in the gorilla pen at the zoo and the gorillas played it. The Mole Train', watch Mole Miner Max's facial expression (at 0:37) when possed by the Tiki is supposedly a reference to the Dramatic Chipmunk video Tiki Tong has an eye tic similar to that of King K. Rool.
