Koopaul, there are some good apes/monkeys in fiction: - Congorilla (DC Comics) - Detective Chimp (DC Comics) - Sam Simeon (DC Comics; I know he is obscure but he is from Angel and the Ape) - Beppo the Super-Monkey (DC Comics) - Ampersand (Y: The Last Man; he is the last male monkey) - Abu (Disney's Aladdin) - Rafiki (Disney's The Lion King) - Monkey (Kung Fu Panda) - Monkey (Dial M for Monkey) That's all I can come up with right now but that just goes to show that good apes/monkeys do exist in fiction. By the way, I think King Kong isn't a villain. He is just a giant wild animal who is just doing whatever he would have been doing in his native island if the humans didn't poach him and bring him to the city where he doesn't belong.

^ Also Beast from X-Men who's based on a gorilla.

I'm not bothered by ape villains. King King and Mojo Jojo are some of my favorite characters ever.
What does bother me is that over the past decade or so apes and monkeys have sort of declined in popularity in film and television. Most fellow geeks out there on the Internet (weeaboos especially) seem to prefer almost every other animal in existence over apes.
Lemme tell ya, I am absolutely fucking sick of cats.

Hey! Cats aren't that bad. But yes, I am tired of cat/dog/wolf/fox furries... why did they have to turn Beast into a cat furry? Why not a gorilla furry?

King Kong wasn't a villain.
Unless you think the people captured him, abused him, and forced him to perform for the amusement of others were heroes or something.
Ditto for Mighty Joe Young.

Anyways, Japan loves it some Journey to the West, as most of their anime characters are based on Sun Wukong, the monkey king (Goku, Monkey D. Luffy)...

The original King Kong was never loved by character in the film. All that gal did was scream and not a soul sympathized with Kong. The giant ape's range of emotions in that movie went from angry to confused to very angry.

The giant ape's range of emotions in that movie went from angry to confused to very angry. I see you missed the entire point of the movie. Way to go. Humanity doesn't sympathise with Kong in the original movie until the very end. This is because humanity is the villain in King Kong. What does bother me is that over the past decade or so apes and monkeys have sort of declined in popularity in film and television. Most fellow geeks out there on the Internet (weeaboos especially) seem to prefer almost every other animal in existence over apes. But there are still, like, twice as many movies out there about apes than any other animal. Except maybe dinosaurs. Do you really need a steady stream of new ape material to keep you going?

No, of course we don't. But Nintendo do. Apes are not the mascot of a major media corporation.
