Is it me or do Nintendo Fans really not give a crap about Donkey Kong? Not really the series I'm talking about, but the character himself.
I guess to many, he's just a Big, Dumb Ape with a neck tie. But seriously, he's actually smarter than that. And people forget that he can talk perfectly well(ditto Yoshi).
But I just see the typical big ape in fanworks.
It doesn't help that out of fighting gameplay, Donkey's is probably one of the most ordinary, plain, and down-to-earth. He doesn't have any super powers, special abilities, or cool weapons. He's just a primate that relies on his own instincts.
Perhaps that's the reason. Maybe people just find him too normal. Too... boring.

This is the wrong section for this kind of thing.
Aslo DK has used weapons, and special powers throughout the series.
Let me tell you my theory why DK isn't so popular. He's an ape. He's not a cat, not a dog, not a fox... An ape. Apes in media are almost always portrayed as stupid brutes or evil villains? Why? Because they are hairier unevolved versions of ourselves.
Unlike an anthropomorphic Fox, apes are already very human-like therefor anthropomorphizing one seems strange.
It is just common to see apes as subhuman while other animals are something different altogether. It's a sad thing really.
I once had a conversation about DK fanart on Deviantart as to why there isn't much of it compared to others. Someone replied:
This person believes that apes and crocodile are boring compared to other animals.

And I never did find a primate nor crocodile boring.

Koopaul's point was that OTHER people seem to find it boring. More who don't than those who do. A large majority of geeks (especially on the internet) gravitate towards dogs, cats, wolves foxes, birds, bears and damn near every other animal that aren't apes.
Putting DK aside, apes get hardly any recognition these days. When the new Planet of the Apes movie was announced I was overjoyed because we hadn't had a movie about apes since Peter Jackson's King Kong (Space Chimps will NEVER count).

I can't believe none of you are talking about how nobody cares about hyenas. You guys are fucking heartless.

I wager there's more people out there who care about hyenas than they do about apes.
*looks at both The Lion King and Harley Quinn*

Guys! Nobody cares about beluga whales! It's an outrage. At least the DK series is FULL of apes! There aren't even any beluga Pokemon for Christ's sake!

I wager there's more people out there who care about hyenas than they do about apes. Are you being serious, 'cause that's nuts. I've never seen a movie that focused on hyenas. Sure, I've seen hyena characters in things, but I've never heard of Planet of the Hyenas or Tarzan of the Hyenas. You guys are so focused on apes that the animals that really need our attention are being ignored. Everybody loves apes, from King Kong to Homer Simpson to that one that knew sign language and had a kitten that got parodied by everyone and their grandma. If anything, apes are probably out there saying "why can't these fucking humans leave us alone already." Meanwhile, where are the movies about manatees? Like I said. Fucking heartless.

Most if not all of those examples were villainous, which is unfortunately how DK is remembered the most.

DK is remembered most for the Country series and his appearances in Mario sports games. It's only older people and hardcore nerds that know he was once a villain.
I'm gonna be honest - I've seen more non-villainous apes than villianous ones. You guys just seem to be upset that ape villains exist, like it's some kind of racist stereotype or something. Something you need to remember is that villains are just as beloved as heroes. Often even more so.

Well, personally... there is one little pet peeve I have about Donkey Kong in Smash Bros. I am kinda annoyed that Donkey Kong does not have a special move where he throws barrels like he does in the arcade games. That's what he is best known for!
The same goes for Wario... I still dislike his moveset based on his WarioWare personality. I wanted him to have a moveset based on his Wario Land abilities but that's for another thread.
