I found it amazing at what would cause a censor and what would not. There are the ones you'd normally see, such as people named Dick can't put their own name in without triggering a warning. And then there was this word that I don't know why was censored: connect. Seriously. I thought maybe it had some meaning that I wasn't aware of, but then a quick check online told me no. And then there's this thing: substituting the characters with Greek/Cyrillic/symbol lookalike will make you successfully pass through the filter. So you are free to make words with an f-with-hook (ƒ), a Cyrillic letter Es (с), a dotless i (ı), Greek Kappa (κ), Cyrillic Ie (е) and so on. That's already 21 ways to get away with the German f-word. I'm amused.

Connect is blocked because "con" is French for 'idiot'. There is a similar (probably the exact same keywords) blacklist system in Pokémon Black and White's GTS and for a while Pokémon like un-nicknamed Co(fag)rigus were not allowed through the system. Offline, the game refuses to let you nickname a Pokémon, or enter it in a related input system, but not if it only contains it (e.g. dinosaur is allowed but sau isn't). Also, you can transfer Pokémon from Generation IV to Generation V even if their nickname is that offensive keyword. Despite this, the GTS would still block a nickname simply for containing the keyword. It appears like this is still an on-going problem though, even though periodically un-nicknamed Cofagrigus started appearing on the GTS again (I haven't played Pokémon Black and White for a while though, mind you).

Connect is blocked because "con" is French for 'idiot'. i thought of that, but "con" alone does pass through. The blocked portion is "conne" - is Nintendo implying that it's okay to insult males? I dunno.... As far as non-English offensive words go, fesse gets censored, as is the German f-word. Romanized Japanese do pass through tough. "XXX", Internet language for porn, as well as "pron", do pass through; while "pr0n" does not. And then there are cases that non-offensive words containing offensive substrings that can pass through, like "Assess". The censor system still looks very mysterious to me.
