During the N64 era credit sequences were incredible in games like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time.
In Mario 64 the birds fly into the sun and you flying and swooping through all the worlds you went to through.
In OoT there's a great party showing all the characters celebrating. And in MM it shows all the characters living happily ever after.
They were a great reward for completing the game. But then in the Gamecube era Mario Sunshine had boring stills of the various places you went to. Wind Waker had panning down the ocean while character shot float up. Twilight Princess was a little better but still boring compared to the OoT and MM ending. Then Galaxy came out and once again it was boring screens, no sequence!
I used to enjoy watching the credits in these games but now they are very boring.
What do you guys think? Maybe Skyward Sword will have a grand celebration during the credits?

Dude...You forgot about the credits of NSMBW and SMG2? Those were interactive, for crying out loud!

Um boring interactive. You get to run around in a small area in Galaxy 2. And NSMBW had you destroying credit blocks.
I want something fantastical for a credit sequence. Something that makes me go "ooooh aaaaah"

The staff roll is always the tedious bit between the thrill of beating the boss and watching the outcome, and the game returning you to the title screen to receive any unlocked bonus features.
While some interaction during these scenes is welcome, largely so I don't have to sit there bored out of my mind, it does sound like you are actively trying to ignore the games that do this because you forgot to remove your rose-tinted spectacles.
Yes, the Super Mario 64 staff roll was great back in 1996, but to say it's better than in modern games? That's just pure guff!
Sure, Galaxy has a deadfully dull credit sequence, and the fact you had to watch it twice to totally beat the game (and can't skip it) was really stupid. But Galaxy 2 let you run around, try all kinds of crazy crap out. Hell, I was leaping all over the place. I wonder what happens if I go over here! Wheeee! Ooh a giant cake! Can I... YES! I can jump on the cake! Wheeee!
I didn't even notice the credits were rolling half the time. Same with New SMB Wii. I almost always played this with a friend, so we competed to break the most blocks, or tried to break certain names so they spelled rude words (why yes, I am 28 years old... why do you ask?)
It's a necessary element of the game. They can be boring, beautiful or provide a distraction, so long as they exist to credit all the people who worked on the game. Galaxy 2 mixed beautiful and distracting wonderfully. That's good, right?

Jesus Fucking Christ, Koopaul, is there anything you won't complain about? Have you seen credits from the 90s? They were just straight up text crawls.

All I need from a credits sequence is awesome music, and I can't think of games that do that better than Mario or Zelda. Wind Waker and Mario Sunshine are actually some of my favourite credit sequences, those songs are great. XD
I usually view the credits as a few minutes to compose myself again after a long and stressful final battle. I don't want to be playing during them, and although it's nice, I really couldn't care less whether the story continues during them. Credits time is break time.

I liked Windwaker's credit sequence personally. The water background effects were pretty, and I liked how they showed every character in the game in the bubbles. (Including some unimportant NPCs.) Something about that, and the lovely end music just seemed lovely, and very movie-like to me personally.
Honestly, I was never really bothered by straight-up credit roll endings to games. If the music was good, or if it had amusing footage from the game, I wouldn't care at all about having to sit through them. Plus, sometimes having cinama scenes during them like in Ocarina sometimes kinda spoiled the "movie-ish" quality to me. (Sometimes I like to read the credits to personally, to see who did what, and how many people went into making the game.)
I also kinda liked the interactive SMG2 & NewSMBWii credit sequences personally. I don't understand what's "wrong" with them personally. They brought a sense of playfulness to the ending.

Kind of brought up this topic before . . .Video games are probably one of the few mediums (if not the only) where people actually watch the credits (think of people leaving movie theatres, or how TV networks remove credit sequnces or cause credit pushback so you can't even read them and substitute with ads). Then again, with most titles you have to beat the game to view them in the first place (or sometimes there in the manual). There's also the chance that if the game is being rushed for release, just to come up with a simple scrolling text on black background and call it a day. It great when story based games sort of have a slight after story that play's throughout the credits (TLoZ OoT, MM, TP. Starfox 64). Now a slight question, what do you guys think of the MK64 end credits? It tells no story, it's not interactive and all it has is a unique (and wondeful) piece of music, it just shows off the 16 racetracks from the game, but yet I still love it. EDIT: Just watched SM64's credit sequnce again and made me relise how much it is like MK64.

I always loved Mario Kart 64's credits. And Mario 64's. They're also both very similar to the first part of Ocarina of Time's credits.

I find that credit sequences give you time for your adrenaline to come down a bit. That's often why I sit through them. It was jarring back in the really olden days to beat a game just to be dumped back at the title screen, still buzzing from your victory.
Nintendo does some great credits music, and while modern games usually have a special, wonderful ending theme, the same was even true back in the Game Boy days. Super Mario Land, SML2 and Donkey Kong GB credits themes rank in my top videogame tunes.
The Super Mario Sunshine music sticks in my head because it conjured up images of Brazilian football (soccer)... which I'm probably only familiar with thanks to football advertising. Still, it is very summery!

What makes SM64's credit sequence good (and MK64) is the camera panning around every area where you went in your long adventure to get to the game's end. Allows you to look back and go 'ah yeah, I remember that place'. The kickass music helps too.
I remember some magazine having this article how DK64's ending was even better than Mario 64's, but in the end that only featured the Kong family screwing around their threehousses. SNORE

I only liked SM64 & MK64's endings for the music personally.

Yes I kinda want to see things happening in the ending sequences. I want to see a live showcase of the worlds or the characters doing some fun stuff.
Remember Paper Mario's parade ending?
The reason I don't like interactive credit sequences is because I want to sit back and take in all the glory of this game.
Besides in Galaxy 2 you get absolutely nothing out of it anyway. I can jump around and leap in any old world, want something special for the ending. Not what I was just doing for the entirety of the game only not as good.

Well, Galaxy 2's credits were essentially the same as Mario 64's. The worlds and characters were showcased. The only difference was that you could control Mario at the same time.
