There's a "star bit" at 4:31
Though it might be derived from the common source, kompeitou.

Just so you all know, I've been carefully avoiding any major spoilers in this game by avoiding all footage for the past couple of weeks... So if these cameos aren't added to the site immediately, that's why

Very minor spoiler, at the beginning of the game at the bird ceremony, one of the instructors mentions that it's the 25th anniversary of the school. An obvious reference to the series turning 25.

There's a lot of nods to other games in the series, but I'm not sure how many of them count as cameos. There's even a few places where people say "It's dangerous to go..." but never quite a complete direct lift from what I've seen...
Also, the "Star Bits" aren't an original Mario creation, and the way they're used (and appear) in the game is very different.

One thing I noticed that isn't a storyline point is that some Bokoblins blow their horns, and it's the same tune as the Flute Boy (later Link's flute) in A Link to the Past.

Sneak into Zelda's room using the rooftop entrance, then look on her desk. She has a Tingle doll!

So someone on Gaf posted this. What say you guys? Intentional design choices or mere coincidence?

I'm thinking coincidence, myself. Maybe the Auru guy, but the rest don't convince me.

One or two characters have resemblances to older characters... and yet all of those suggestions are SO way off, I can't help but think it's a joke The old guy who sits in the bazaar during the day and the Lumpy Pumpkin at night looks like the annoying old poor guy from Windfall Island in The Wind Waker who chases after you. And I suspect the Lumpy Pumpkin owner is this game's Talon/Tarin...

Hey does anyone think the guy who sells you items looks like the Happy Mask salesman?

He does have the same huge cheesy grin, which made me think of him when I first saw him, but on reflection the similarities aren't very strong.
But I think I was looking for cameos from as soon as I turned the game on, so I jumped to some early conclusions.
One thing - not a cameo but potentially a story-relevant reference - is that the robots that work in the Lanayru region have very similar designs on their heads to Midna...

Idk if this would classify as a cameo, but it's still interesting nonetheless and I can't think of another place in which to mention it: BE CAREFUL, SPOILER ALERT, YADA YADA YADAThe 4th Temple, the Ancient Cistern, and it's design seem to be based of a Japanese tale by the name of "The Spider's Thread". I'll mention the similarities and include a link so y'all can read it. - The Tale depicts a time which Buddha is observing a lotus pond. The center building's design is clearly based off of Buddhist Statues and Buddhism.
- Again with the Lotus Pond, Lotus plants can be seen everywhere and are part of various puzzles on the first floor. There are even some dried ones that can be hit to obtain items.
- Hell itself below the Paradise, which is similar to the beautiful first floor is above the dark and sinister basement. The game mentions that the water is being purified and that which is not pure is sent to the lower level, which is comparable to souls being sent to either the Paradise or Hell. You also meet the Cursed Bokoblin, which FI mentions that they've been reanimated purely from the hatred of this world, for the first time when you drop down utilizing the Buddha Building.
- Part of what the tale talks about is of the murder and thief, Kandata, who is a resident in Hell. During his life, he only showed sympathy for another once, which was to spare the life of a Spider he almost killed in a Forest. The spider enemy, Skulltula, can be found in this Dungeon.
- Even more on the Spiders in this dungeon, and it is even closer to what is lived in game. On day, Kandata looks up and sees a silvery, silky spider's thread descend from above. This is similar to how Link escapes the basement level.
- But the similarities don't end there. When Kandata begins climbing, from below, he spots that the other sinners from Hell have decided to climb the spider's thread, adjacent to how when Link begins to climb, Cursed Bokoblins pop out from the ground and climb up after Link.
- When Kandata notices the swarm of sinners climbing up below him, he yells at them to let go of the thread, as it was his and only his. After this, the thread snaps just above Kandata and he, along with the other sinners, drop back down to hell. Interestingly, this works the other way around in the game, because if Link does not shake off the Bokoblins as he climbs up, then he will be over weighed and will plummet back down to the basement floor.
The last point could be due to the fact that Link is not a sinner but a hero, as even when Buddha finishes observing what had happened to Kandata, he thinks to himself that the reason the thread snapped right above him is due to the fact that Kandata had a compassionless heart, as opposed to Link's courageous and compassionate heart. I'd like to see some discussion on this one, along with the entire thought. SourcePS: Don't think that I once read this on my own and just noticed the similarities. I was listening Skyward Sword's Music on youtube, and when I came to the Ancient Cistern's theme, one of the top comments mentioned the tale and said it was similar to the Ancient Cistern and that everyone should check it out. I'm just relaying info and taking it apart to show the similarities.

Another slight reference to the Zelda series as a whole is the Thunder Dragon model name for Link is LD-Link-16 a reference to being the 16th Link/game of the series (excludes ports/remakes obviously when counting).
EDIT: Another "anniversary" cameo may have been found (or it's just a coincidence) In Lanaryru Desert the "clock" puzzle used to access the temple, uses the numbers 12, 9 and 4 which add up to 25.

Shadrio's Buddhist thing... WOW. No wonder. Also, that boss battle was one of the most epic I've ever fought. I wonder if Koloktos is based on anything.

Apparently, it seems that there's an easter eggs of the movie "Titanic" in Skyward Sword (Watch in 1080p so you can get a clear image of the easter egg):
Maybe I should replay this game (still haven't started Hero Mode), just to be on a search for pop culture easter eggs and whatnot.
