We have topics for fighters, stags, music and multiplayer modes, so why not make one that covers everything else? Anything's welcome here (well, maybe not complete list of 1000s of trophies, that'd be too lengthy =P). And I'll start with... CostumesMany game characters come in multiple outfits, and SSB gmaes should really take advantage of those. This is already done for some alternate colours like Pikachu and Jigglypuff, so why not the rest of the cast as well? The Mario cast can get normal and Strikers Charged outfits; and we can include individual chracters showing up as Dr Mario, Mr L, even bride Peach and groom Bowser. Link and Zelda can actually turn into entirely different Links and Zeldas (I mean, OoT adult Link, TP Link and SS Link all have similar physiques anyway). The Star Fox crew get to wear their 64 or Command uniforms. The Fire Emblem cast can get to be in different classes (Lord, Great Lord...) or even appear differently ( Masked Marth, normal Marth, pantsless Marth, manly Marth...)... So many potential possibilities. Custom musicSaid so many times over. Best if it supports gapless play like Foobar2000 does. Downloadable charactersHow about this: Allow downloadable characters as well. Such data can be kept in the SD card (with securities like the 3DS has, such data will be safe for a good while, no worries), which goes all the way to 64GB or even larger. The downside is obviously more loading time for multiplayer matches (in case of 3DS), but since Brawl is pretty laggy anyway, I don't really mind waiting for an extra half minute. If those extra characters are excluded from normal gameplay (beat ____ with all characters), there will really be no reason not to keep it growing. Nintendo-themed custom stageAnd not based on whatever adventure mode is there. Part of the existing stages can serve as the base, allowing players to use the mechanics specific to those stages.

At the risk of imitating Capcom's Vs series, I'd like to see a Tag Team mode. Not like the co-op multi-player mode, but one where you can pick two characters and swap them in and out during gameplay. I just kinda like the idea of being able to create teams of characters.

About teams, Tekken (or Tekken 3 atleast) has this Team Battle mode where both players can pick a set of 3 to 8 characters, after which you battle it out in the same order. The winner keeps the same character and health so it's eliminationary rather then a bunch of separate matches. I always thought something similar would've worked well with Smash Bros as another stock mode of sorts where you select a different fighter for each life
Though with the way characters are loadded in Brawl this probably wouldn't work very smoothly

Well, there's this one thing I suspect Sakurai might add in Smash 4... running till your character gets tired. I mean, that's what is in Uprising so I think Sakurai might include that one...

Mr L, even bride Peach and groom Bowser. Hate to say, but while it was an okay game, I don't think Super Paper Mario is THAT worthy. Especially the latter two in that, well, how the hell did they even become trophies in Brawl? However, I've also always been in favor of far greater character changes with switching colors/outfits like the rest you mentioned. Maybe someday, another thing SSB will allow for could be 3D-based gameplay. The multiplayer in Kid Icarus Uprising should give you an idea about that.

Not to be the downer, but as far as the costume swap idea, YL, there's really only 11 characters who have outfits significant enough to merit it. Beach Mario, Mr. L, Sporty Shorts Peach, *cough* Wario, Ordon/Squire Link (pick your title,) SS or pre-OoT Zelda, OoT or WW Ganondorf, Outset or Train Link, Assault Fox, Assault Falco, and "A Dragon Stole My Pants" Marth.
I'm pretty sure I've said it before, but I'd like to see the return of Board the Platforms. As well, the individual Break the Targets should come back as well, and on top of that, I'd like to add on a multiplayer mode to these.
Also: Mode mixing. For example, Endurance Stock. Fight until you run out of lives, using an HP system. Or Endurance Coin. Fight to knock-out, then whoever has the most coins when one fighter's left wins. Or to the extreme: Endurance Stock Coin Time. Endurance Stock with a timer, and whoever has the most coins at the end of the match wins. I could actually come up with rules pretty damn fast with this, since it's not a real challenge. There's Time everything, but that's it.

The alternate colors are taken from original games when available, otherwise the SSB games would just make up their own. I'd say costumes, if implemented, can go for this direction as well. As for whether the alternate outfits are significant enough, that would be another question, although I'd say if the developers keep claiming that Smash Bros is no popularity contest (I'd say they're only half-correct), this could be one of the places to show this. Some characters already have alternates that aren't simple recoloring, so why not expand it to reflect what's in the actual games?
Another idea from me, although I'm sure I've mentioned it many times over:
Battle settings that saves
I prefer stock over time, 2 stocks over 3 stocks, and blah blah blah blah blah. Why do I have to change that setting every time I start the game?

Based on what criteria other than the 'because I said so' criteria? Any other suit Samus immediately comes to mind as just one example of many not listed there, plus I'd argue that basically any of Mario's powerup costumes are more significant than Beach Mario, as much as I love Mazza rocking a Hawaiian shirt and sunnies.

Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome idea, it's just, in implementation, you start to see that most of, say, Samus' alternate suits are just color-swaps of the primary Power Suit. Something similar happens to Mario: Most of his outfits are just "hat-shirt-overalls." There are only a few that break from either tradition. For Samus, it's only the Zero Suit and that Phazon Clone who's name eludes me, and for Mario, it's his animal suits, his transformations, Beach Mario, and Strikers Mario*. As for why I didn't list Strikers Mario, that's because, honestly, it slipped my mind. But looking back at it, I do see a reason to question it, at least: Strikers is the only sports game where Mario has a different outfit. Strikers Mario isn't indicative of Mario in sports as a whole. That said: I could definitely see Peach taking to Strikers kit. It's kinda because she's always changing for sports, and Strikers manages to take her traditional change and still make her look like a princess. Every other time she just looks like a pink jogger with a crown.
* I welcome you to prove that paragraph wrong, though, since honestly, that's just those ones that come to my mind and, should you do so, I will happily eat that half-decayed jackdaw on the ground. Someone needs to clean that up anyways. Someone's needed to for some time. There shouldn't have even been fresh jackdaw down there. It's hard to get up every evening and brew a cup of coffee with lifeless, worm-eaten jackdaw eye-socket staring at you from the kitchen floor. I lost my train of thought complaining about fictitious jackdaw carcass. Crap.

Samus gets the Fusion Suit. easy enough!
give Mario his Wrecking Crew outfit or his baker outfit or something, he's got plenty of silly one-off costumes to work with.
Pokemon Trainer's easy, obviously - just turn him into any of the other Pokemon Trainers.
a Boshi costume for Yoshi would be great, but I'm used to seeing the Mario RPGs get the shaft at this point B'(

You can argue either way for the Fusion Suit. On one hand, yes, it is more than just a recolor, but on the other hand, it's really just a smoothed-over (and spiked) version of the traditional Power Suit.
After reading your response, mopinks, I thought of Doc, so I'll accede to that. BUT! Most of those really are just poorly-remembered one-offs from poorly-remembered games (for example, if it weren't for NinDB, I'd still have no idea who Baker Mario was, i.e., the Yoshi's Cookie Mario who never appeared again.) As for Wrecking Crew Mario? Same problem as, for instance, Bee Mario: Hat, shirt, overalls. Kinda indistinct.
I was ignoring the Pokemon Trainer since it's the Pokemon that matter, not the Trainer. Frankly, you could replace Red with both Jessie and James teamed together and still end up playing the same Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard.
No Super Mario RPG-only characters can be referenced. The problem is, Square owns the rights to those characters. Unless we get Cloud or Black Mage or something, there will be no Geno, no Mallow, and, topically, no Boshi.

I don't really care about the idea enough to come up with a list - I think having alternate costumes would be cool, but at best I only see it happening as horribly overpriced DLC. Its just that the idea that of the current Smash list, only 11 having significant enough costumes to do something with is incredibly ridiculous. Some of Samus's suits might be similar to her Power suit, but there's enough changes there that Nintendo could easily get away with selling them as separate things. There are plenty of other costumes for characters even staying within the rules that the characters must be the same one but in a different set of clothing, let alone what becomes available once you expand out of this (tons of fighting games have costumes where characters dress up as another, SSB could definitely do that).

Fair 'nuff there, Undies. Still not eating that jackdaw, though. My point is still valid in terms of "Character gets what character owns." There are not many who do own.
In any case, we do agree on one point: I don't really care as much about the idea as the discussion may have led readers to believe. I mean, it does merit the discussion since it was brought up and there are problems that would need to be worked on for it to work. It's just, I don't know, I guess I care less than I thought I did. =/
Can we get a broom, now? Floor-crow's starting to reek.

Let's just try to think of what's available for our current roster, no?
Mario - Sunshine Mario, Doctor Mario, Hatless Mario, Shadow/Cosmic Mario and numerous power up options Luigi - Mr. L, Hatless Luigi, and numerous power up options Peach - Shadow Peach, Sporty Peach Bowser - Dry Bowser Wario - Biker Wario, The Purple Wind, and numerous power up options Yoshi - Doesn't really need any, but variations of spikes and shades or things like that could be a thing
Donkey Kong - Arcade DK, Funky Kong's duds could work too Diddy - Blanking on this one, but Donkey Kong Jr. could be a thing.
Link - Dark Link, Armored Link, Ordon Link, and various other incarnations Zelda - Her various incarnations are all pretty similar, so I'm not sure what could be added here. Ganondorf - His OoT and TWW outfits would be cool Toon Link - Dark Link, Islander Link
Samus Aran - Fusion Suit, Ligh/Dark Suits from Echoes. For Z-Suit Samus, she could be in those shorts and top from the Fusion ending. (A bikini would be very un-Nintendo)
Star Fox Crew - Assault uniforms
Pokemon Trainer - The Pokemon themselves probably can't change much in themselves, but the trainer could be swapped with protags from different generations. Other Pokemon - Honestly just having more ornament options is all they really need.
Pit - Centurion armor
Captain Falcon - He could don some costumes from similarly statured racers, like Super Arrow and Phoenix.
Fire Emblem Guys - Lots of options from class changes to the newest games giving them redesigns.
Kirby - Color changes are probably enough King Dedede - Blanking here. Meta Knight - Ditto, though didn't he have an evil clone/copy in Super Star?
Lucas - Maybe the Masked Boy? Ness - no clue
Olimar - Louie, the President, and the new guys from Pikmin 3
Mr. Game & Watch - Doesn't need one. R.O.B. - Ditto. (Though an Ancient Minister option could be cool)
Ice Climbers - No clue.
-
I think there's costume options for most everyone. But not everyone needs them either. But it would be cool if at least everyone had one, even if some of them had to be made up. Some options (like Mario losing his hat) could just be a normal color swap option, like Pikachu gaining hats.

Not sure about made up outfits, as cool as Ali Baba Wario would be. Smash Bros is sort of a celebration of iconic Nintendo characters and their clothes are part of their image. Giving them all new outfits in a game like this just seems weird to me
I like the idea of extra outfits based on different characters of the same franchise though, plus it gives characters a few more options. A Bowser skin based on Morton Jr/Roy Koopa for example, complete with star pattern and pink shades
