-The 2012 NinDB Top 25 - Voting closed. Let's bring some fun back to NinDB, shall we? Since the world is ending later this year, I thought it was time to bring back the NinDB Top 25 for one more tally. It's been a whopping four years since the last one, and nearly an entire console generation has gone by, so it should be interesting to see how our tastes have changed. Things will work mostly the same since last time, but it's been a while, so here's a refresher: How to vote Simply post your list of up to 25 games in order of preference. Your list doesn't have to have all 25 games, but it should have at least five, and the more games on your list, the better. Votes will be accepted until September 7! You can also change your vote before then. What you can vote for Almost any game officially released for a Nintendo console in any region is eligible. This includes all Virtual Console games and digital downloads. Apologies to anyone who wanted to vote for Cheetamen II. However, this time I've decided not to allow compliations, so no Super Mario All-Stars. I'd prefer you stuck to individual games. EXCEPTION: If a compliation contains a game that is not available outside that compilation, I'll allow it. How votes are tallied Ranking works on a point system. Your top vote is worth 25 points, and each subsequent vote is worth one point less. Games will be ranked based on point totals. Ties will be broken based on number of votes, followed by a tie-breaker vote. If there are any persisting ties, the older game will automatically win. That's it! Get voting and have fun!
If there are any questions, feel free to ask!Previous results can be viewed here: 20072008

I'm totally down for this, but I'll really need to think about it! My tastes have changed a lot since 2008!

I'm going to update this to have 25, but this is where I start for now.
1. Rhythm Heaven Fever An extremely fun game, with great music and great games. Localization is also done really well.
2. Xenoblade Chronicles Great RPG with an awesome sense of scale. I truly love all the party members, not something I do often.
3. Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem I haven't played the new game yet, but I think this one is the best game in the series with the extended campaign, BS Fire Emblem, and a new three part midquel. 4. Pokemon Conquest The most fun I've had in a Pokemon game in years, these is no better feeling than raising your army, and then crushing your opponents. Please make a sequel.
5. Metroid Fusion I feel that this is the model Metroid game. It has the modern fixings of the 21st century, while keeping the horror atmosphere tight.
6. Super Mario 3D Land Really good platforming and a simple classic for the 3DS. Love Luigi's kitsune costume, suits him quite well.
7. Resident Evil 4 This game is a lesson on pacing. Best Resident Evil game, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
8. Punch Out!! Wii Next Level Games really captured the charm of Punch Out in this game. Rarely has character animation been so great that it makes the characters seem so full of life.
9. Super Mario Galaxy 2 Yoshi! Best platforming on the Wii with great production values.
10. Art Academy I have no artistic talent, so I love doing the lessons in Art Academy and learning. Vince is such a great teacher.
11. Hotel Dusk One of the greatest adventure games of all time, Kyle Hyde is such a boss.
12. Super Smash Bros. Brawl More characters, more stages, more stuff. This is one of the games I've played with my friends the most, and it's such a classic.
13. Famicom Detective Club 2 If you haven't played this game with the translation, do it now. Short, but great game.
14. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess This game is the complete package, the true sequel to Ocarina.
15. Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword This game isn't as good as Twilight in the world department, but it has the best boss fights in my opinion.
16. Star Fox 64 The best level design in the series, this game is a classic. The remake is also great, except for Peppy's and Andross's voices.
17. Kid Icarus Uprising Best music, characters, and story in a long time. Really great game full of the Sakurai value.
18. Advance Wars Dual Strike So many wonderful COs, I love just dominating the map with a pair of COs and watching the destruction.
19. Mario Kart Wii I think I've played this game with my friends even more than Brawl. Unlocking Dry Bowser just felt so good.
20. Baten Kaitos My introduction to non-Pokemon RPGs. Such a beautiful game, too bad nobody played it.
21. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat Combo, combo, combo! I love the way this game is all about continuous combos. It's like parkour the game.
22. Balloon Kid A very cute game which is the natural evolution of the series. Still love to play it even today.
23. Mole Mania Really good puzzle game. I'm glad Fry kept going on about how good it is.
24. Sin & Punishment Star Successor A good fun game, but nothing about it makes any sense.
25. Urban Champion I actually like this game, I got the 3DS version, and found the simple fight mechanics fun. I love getting your opponent arrested in the last second.

Well, I've always had my top 10 scattered around my mind, but I guess I can make a top 25 if I actually took the time to do so. This should be fun.
Just a question, what about a game that was in a compilation and had some sort of modification in said compilation that made even better?

@ Leon Maybe you were going to get to it, but in case it wasn't clear, those will have to be ranked 1-25. Just a question, what about a game that was in a compilation and had some sort of modification in said compilation that made even better? Well, I don't want people to feel like they have to vote for (for example) the NES version of Super Mario 3 if they prefer the All-Stars or GBA versions, which do have enhancements. I don't want to discriminate between consoles simply because it would be silly to have votes for SMB3 spread across three different versions. SMB3 is just SMB3, regardless of which version you have in mind. Now, things can get murky when differentiating between "remakes" and "enhanced ports," and I don't have any particular definitions to follow. If you have a case to make for why a particular version of a game should be counted separately, bring it up and we'll discuss it. I can always make exceptions!

Well, I was specifically referring to Metroid Prime in the trilogy compilation. The Motion controls not only give the game a fresh breath of air, but also controls better, at least in my opinion.
Also, is this a preference poll or a superior game poll? Now, that may sound strange, but for example, I flippin' hate Majora's Mask (with a passion), but I know it is a good game. And another way around is it I love Windwaker, but I believe Skyward Sword is a better game.

I wouldn't differentiate between those versions of Metroid Prime. A vote for Metroid Prime implicitly covers both.
As for your second question, it's subjective either way. Your list should reflect your tastes, and thus you are free to use whatever criteria or rational you see fit in constructing it. It's impossible for everyone's lists to conform to a standard, so there is no right or wrong.

Alrighty, time to have fun with this then I'll try to be as rational as possible, but I always have a mini-orgasm when someone mentions Super Metroid.

Are pre-2008 games allowed? I think.... yes?
Here's my list:
0th, 26 pts - Hotel Mario
1st, 25 pts - Fire Emblem: Kakusei 2nd, 24 pts - Kirby's Return to Dream Land 3rd, 23 pts - Kirby Air Ride 4th, 22 pts - Kirby Super Star Ultra 5th, 21 pts - Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn 6th, 20 pts - Fire Emblem: Shin Monsho no Nazo ~Hikari to Kage no Eiyu~ 7th, 19 pts - Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards 8th, 18 pts - Fire Emblem: Fuin no Tsurigi 9th, 17 pts - Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones 10th, 16 pts - Super Mario Galaxy 2 11th, 15 pts - Kirby & the Amazing Mirror 12th, 14 pts - Super Smash Bros. Melee 13th, 13 pts - Paper Mario (Nintendo 64) 14th, 12 pts - Mario Kart: Double Dash!! 15th, 11 pts - Kirby Mass Attack 16th, 10 pts - Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance 17th, 9 pts - Fire Emblem: Rekka no Ken 18th, 8 pts - Excitebike: World Rally 19th, 7 pts - Cave Story 3D 20th, 6 pts - Golden Sun: The Lost Age 21st, 5 pts - Kirby's Adventure (NES) 22nd, 4 pts - BS Fire Emblem: Akaneia Senki - Chapter 3: Seigi no Dozokudan 23rd, 3 pts - The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures 24th, 2 pts - Super Mario Bros. (Game & Watch) 25th, 1 pt - Mario Tennis GB (Game Boy Color)
I'd like to raise my doubt on not counting compilations. With enhanced remakes, it is possible that the players like what is improved in the enhancement but not the original. May I suggest that the votes be tallied twice to get both results?
As with my own votes, - I voted for Kirby Ultra because it's Ultra. If Nester insists that it be counted towards the SNES version, put it above Golden Sun 2. - I voted for Fire Emblem 12 for its enhancements. If Nester insists that is be counted towards Fire Emblem 3, put it above Game & Watch SMB. - I voted for Kirby's Adventure for the original. If Nester insists that Kirby NiD votes go to this too, put it above Mario Tennis GB. - I don't know what counts as a "game". What about individual levels in BS games? If they are to counted as one, count my BSFE Ch3 vote as BSFE overall with no ranking change.
If I am the judge and I use Nester's "ports don't count" criterion, I'd count Kirby Super Star and Ultra seperately, same for Fire Emblem 3 and Fire Emblem 12, but count Kirby's Adventure and Kirby NiD as one.
EDIT - corrected typo that misspelt "count" into an obscene word.

If anyone wants to remember how they voted last time, it's here. I found it useful for culling my old list. 1. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)Still unmatched for graphics/audio and stage design. Great animation, great boss battles, great everything. My perfect game. It's a shame it hasn't been bested after over 15 years (particularly by its subpar sequels). 2. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)I loved Super Mario Galaxy, and it made it onto my last list, but SMG2 trimmed out all the boring bits, shoved in a load of new ideas and ramped up the challenge. I love it. 3. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GCN)Time has been kind to this one. Perhaps it's the visual style matched with that Ireland inspired music... Perhaps it's the fact the Wind Waker medley at the Zelda Symphony orchestra gave me shivers. But it's enjoying a brief stint as my top Zelda game. 4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)I don't play it as much as I did, but I poured a lot of time into it when it came out and I love it. Looking forward to the Dojo's next bunch of updates for the new ones already! 5. Super Mario Bros. (NES)A classic, even if I can play it blindfolded. 6. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (GB)This is probably my ACTUAL fave Zelda game. Every time I play it I fall in love with it all over again. So good from beginning to end. I'm glad it was given a stage in Four Swords 3DS, as it's been overlooked by a lot of the other 25th anniversary celebrations. 7. Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)I wasn't sure what to expect from this game, but I got a lot of super-challenging levels filled with some amazing stage hazards. And I loved the rocket barrel stages, even if I died a BILLION TIMES! 8. Super Mario World (SNES)This game introduced so many new ideas for the 16-bit console that it's still being farmed for ideas today. Also Yoshi bongos. 9. WarioWare, Inc: Mega Microgames (GBA)I looooove WarioWare, but the original is perhaps still my favourite. Bit rough round the edges, but there's no faulting those microgames. I need moaaar!! 10. Pokemon: Black/White Version (DS)Yep, this is my favourite Pokemon game. It has all of the changes introduced over the years since the original, plus 150 all-new Pokemon to catch. It's wonderfully balanced, way better than the originals, and... hell, it's the first time I caught 'em all since Sapphire. Dunno why I put Diamond/Pearl in my last Top 25 as I hated those games... 11. Donkey Kong Country (SNES)The original is still great, but I find it a bit easy now which is why it's not higher. I still think it's superior to 2/3 as well, even though I finally beat DKC2 this year. 12. Pushmo/Pullblox (3DS)I've played this game to death. A new and novel concept, and it's a cheap download game. Endless fun with designing your own puzzles. 13. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (DS)I picked the first one, although I may have enjoyed the later Phoenix Wright games more - they all kind of blur together as one big game. I love the humour and the use of the courtroom to jangle the nerves! 14. Last Window: The Secret of Cape West (DS)Another adventure game? Sure. And the sequel to Hotel Dusk was superior in so many ways. Such a great story, Kyle Hyde is such a well-written character. Graphics are lush. 15. Wario Land 2 (GBC)I love this Wario Land game still, after all these years. Every time I plonk it in the Game Boy, I have a grand old time trying to clear every stage and get every ending. 16. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)It's dropped down the list a bit. OoT3D was nice, but it really is starting to show its age. Still a great game though. 17. Super Mario 64 (N64)A great game. Getting on a bit, but still great. 18. Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA)When I look back over the Metroid series, this is the one I always love the most. Sure it's a remake, but it's such a well done ground-up remake, injecting the feel of Super Metroid into the original game (which I only recently beat). 19. Kirby Super Star (SNES)Kind of a compilation, but we all love it for Revenge of Meta Knight, right? Well actually the treasure hunting game (mind blank) was also great. And the Marx battle. Bosh. 20. Metroid Fusion (GBA)The first Metroid game I ever beat, and beaten again recently on 3DS. Is it blasphemy that I like this more than Super Metroid? Yes. But I never claimed to be a huge Metroid fan 21. Chibi-Robo! (GCN)The most underrated game on a console filled with them. Bright, colourful, fun adventure... that sinks into dark, depressing family crisis. Fix it little robot! 22. Mole Mania (GB)A superb puzzle game. I really must beat it one of these days... But those later levels are a NIGHTMARE! 23. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)Is it just on this list to be contrary given the recent debacle over it? Kinda. But I also found it a decent challenge with a lot of cool ideas that weren't possible before they did that whole screen-zooming-out thing. I enjoy it. Even if the bosses are lame. 24. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (GCN)Recently played this again, and I must say I really appreciated the course designs and changes in mechanics. Really heart-pounding racing. Shame about MKWii! 25. Mario's Super Picross (SNES)Ah the classic puzzle game. I recently 100%ed this game. Surprisingly long! New puzzles just kept showing up! I love me some Picross. There's my list! Tada!

Ever since my Virtual Console and WiiWare library exploded from 12 games to 72 games over the summer of 2012 (I was bored to death, being bedridden and all), I began to appreciate the non-Mario and non-Zelda games. I also purchased a bunch of digital games through eShop over the past 12 months due to affordability and convenience.
1. Super Mario World [SNES] 2. Kirby's Adventure [NES] 3. Ufouria: The Saga [NES] 4. Okami [Wii] 5. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask [N64] 6. Super Mario 64 [N64] 7. Wonder Boy in Monster World [Genesis] 8. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past [SNES] 9. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time [GCN] 10. Super Castlevania IV [SNES] 11. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island [SNES] 12. Cave Story [WiiWare] 13. Metroid Fusion [GBA] 14. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest [SNES] 15. Wario Land 3 [GBC] 16. Final Fantasy II [SNES] 17. Super Adventure Island II [SNES] 18. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door [GCN] 19. Mega Man X [SNES] 20. Super Smash Bros. Brawl [Wii] 21. Shantae: Risky's Revenge [DSiWare] 22. Mole Mania [GB] 23. Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters [GB] 24. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! [GCN] 25. Punch-Out!! [NES]

Ah, leave it to YL to find exceptions. I'd like to raise my doubt on not counting compilations. With enhanced remakes, it is possible that the players like what is improved in the enhancement but not the original. May I suggest that the votes be tallied twice to get both results? It's not that "ports don't count" as much as "they count the same." It would be silly for votes to be spread across multiple versions of the same game, such as the N64, GCN, Wii and 3DS versions of Ocarina of Time. If I counted them separately, it would skew the results when clearly everyone is voting for the same game. However, you're right that someone may like/dislike the changes in an enhanced port or remake where they would have a significant preference for one or the other. I'm perfectly willing to make exceptions in these cases, because the two versions are different enough to constitute as separate games. As for your particular votes, I will count Kirby Super Star Ultra, Fire Emblem 12 and Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland as separate games. (However, I am lumping Cave Story on Wii and 3DS together. ) With BS, you've opened up another can of worms. I don't know much about it, but it seems that the four chapters go together, so my impulse is to group them. You might have to educate me on this, but since it wouldn't change your vote, it's probably doesn't matter. (Unless someone else decides to vote for a different chapter.)
