Pilotwings!!!! Now I'm even more excited! I definitely love the stage choice of this game!
....But here's a question: How does it even work? It's completely 2D, and looks like a background to me...
I'd say Wuhu Island belongs to the 3DS version (Pilotwings Resort, Mario Kart 7), like Gerudo Valley.

Just to play devil's advocate, this random picture could, in fact, be of anything, not just a stage background. I mean, I'm pretty sure it is, but who knows at this point?
In regards to why the use of retro style, I suggest that maybe it could be because, as a franchise based on specific locations, Sakurai wanted it to be represented in the most recognisable form. It could be for any number of reasons, though.
Also, here's some entirely baseless thoughts on what I think would make this stage cool: A moving stage, which starts of 'in the sky' with the retro ground in the background, only to transition down to the ground (maybe through clouds) and end up with a new style representation of each area. Blending old and new, basically.

Obviously it's SSB4's title screen background!
Honestly though, Pilotwings stage? Based on the SNES version? That's mad cool and gives me slight hope for an actual Waverace stage (but probably not). I'm guessing the stage will be a bunch of floating platforms with that island far in the background, which isn't as creative as stages actually taking place on landscapes (Onett, SMW Yoshi's Island) but hey I'll take what I can get.
If this were Brawl I'd figure Pilot Wings would be represented with a stage only, but I wouldn't be surprised if fucking Lark appeared in the roster now (and that'd be awesome)

I popped on to see today's pic after a week or so away... And it's a friggin' SNES Pilotwings map? Whaaaaaat?
I'm not convinced this is a stage. For starters... There's no platforms or anything. Could it be part of an Assist Trophy attack perhaps?

There's plenty of screenshots focused purely on the stage backgrounds tho
An Assist Trophy attack like a cinematic cutscene? Sure it's possible, but Cp.Falcon's final smash is bad enough. Really don't want random ATs breaking the flow of the game

Maybe it's a "map gallery" element akin to Trophies, Stickers, Masterpieces and the like Whatever it is, though, I agree it's awesome and it's the kind of updates that I love.

I wonder if the SNES Pilotwings stage will have us fighting on top of 16-bit pixelated biplanes as they fly around the island, showing off the Mode 7 effects.

If this is a stage, this is really cool. Nice to see a lower tier classic get repped.
Here's hoping Wuhu Island is in the 3DS version. I actually really like the idea of that stage as something that ties Nintendo's various sports together. It should be used more, in fact.

Can't wait to see more information on this Pilotwings picture. Part of me wishes it to be during the Nintendo Direct, but it may instead focus on many games to be released soon.

Nothing has been put up yet. There is a Nintendo Direct in about 5 hours. This has to mean something. Get on board the hype train.
Disappointment is coming.

Wuhu Island originated in Wii Sports Resort so there's still a small chance it will appear on the Wii U version.
