Hey hey NinDBites! So SSB4 is coming out, and there's been a lot of talk going up, down, around, and such on who's staying, who's going, and possibly even who's returning. As such, I am starting a betting pool! So, here are the rules.
1) Name characters who you expect will be cut.
2) Name characters who you expect will return.
3) Name newcomers who you expect will appear.
4) A/B options are allowed. What this means is that you may say "I expect either Donkey Kong or Bowser."
5) If someone gets one right, please post fan-art of their victorious character! (You don't have to, mind, but that's hardly fun. Also, I'm putting this in the Fan Art/Fic Board because art's on the line.) Also, while you don't have to follow suit, I'll be posting fan-art of my own victories (and for that matter losses) as well and you are encouraged to do so yourself.
Place your bets!
Here are mine.
Cuts: I see Toon Link being cut, given that his most recent iteration is the engineer, and he seems to be a stage element. I'm also betting on Lucario for this, since he's no longer particularly relevant, being that he is behind two generations in relevance and is neither grandfathered in like Jigglypuff nor a source of serious nostalgia like Red and his Brawl team. Ike is a toss-up for me, but I'm going to put him on the spot because I'm pretty sure he's no longer a relevant Fire Emblem representative. Finally, I can kinda see Snake not returning since the red tape may tie him up.
Returns: Red, as I've implied, seems like an obvious choice for me simply because of nostalgia, but I also add on that if he were cut, that'd be a surprise since he is also a starter, which strikes me as good enough cause for return. It seems that Jigglypuff would be chosen by many for a cut, but by this point she seems to be grandfathered (grandmothered?) into a slot. I expect Ganondorf's return, both for grandfathering and because, despite his recent break from the Zelda series (OoT3D not withstanding,) he is the villain with both the most screen-time and the most recurrence. Speaking of the Zelda series, I expect Zelda to be designed after Twilight Princess, and I expect Sheik (hence I don't vote for Zelda: They'd come together.) I also put in a bet for Sonic here. There seems to be far less red tape surrounding him these days. Finally, I expect Mewtwo's return, in spite of being cut for Brawl, since he's gained some relevance again in Pokemon X/Y with his new form, and I can see that getting advertised here (hopefully, in my view, as a Wario-esque alt costume so I can still be classic Mewtwo.)
Newcomers: I chose Samurai Goroh, Isaac, Little Mac, and Waluigi because, to me, if Assist Trophies start getting upgraded these four seem high priority. I can't be positive on Isaac, but I can imagine some Golden Sun representation and he'd be the obvious choice, while Samurai Goroh just...he needs to be in damn it, it was a missed opportunity in Brawl. Little Mac just seems obvious to me. Admittedly, Waluigi is only a maybe, but he strikes me as a silly choice, and really, he seems like the sort of character who Sakurai might flip-flop over for series representation. I mean, it may not be the best example, but look at Yoshi. Besides these four, I'm also half-expecting Tingle to get an upgrade, or barring him, Impa. I'm only half-expecting Tingle because he hasn't been appearing in much more than cameos lately, so I can't say he's definite. If not him, I can see Impa appearing, given her continuing importance to the series and the relevance Skyward Sword has given her. I'm of the impression that the Balloon Fighter will appear eventually, so he's in my pool. I'm also expecting either Dixie Kong or King K. Rool. They seem like lowered chances for me if Sakurai only looks to DKCR for inspiration, but if he goes for the series as a whole (and further if he decides to consider more DK characters,) these are the obvious next two choices.
