For years, I have wondered about the Killer Whale cheat in Wave Race 64. In Dolphin Park Warm-Up Mode, follow the dolphin for 20-30 laps. If you have followed it correctly, it will flip over the pier. At the end of the 3rd, 5th and 7th laps, baby dolphins will appear. At the end of the 20th/30th lap, a killer whale will appear.
Now, I've been hearing variations of this trick since before the game was released in the UK. I've never had the patience to try it... Until today.
And it doesn't work. I even went up to 40 laps to be on the safe side. The Dolphin flipped on every lap, but nothing appeared. I immediately went on YouTube to see if it was possible and... no videos.
This cheat is still extremely widespread, but has nobody formally debunked it until now? Because I'd declare this pretty debunked.
(PS. Each lap take just over a minute, so that's over 40 minutes of racing without crashing - I didn't even pause in case it messed it up... which was quite a tedious exercise!)
Oh, Hai by the way. I'm still here.

Ouch. You should have recorded it while you were at it.
I've never heard of the trick myself, and I don't have the game. But it does look like something someone can try on emulator (which would be much less stressful).

Hey Fry, welcome back. =P
Yeah, I'm with YL. It's not a true debunk unless recorded, because no matter how trustworthy the source (i.e., even granted that we're talking about you, Fry,) some half-wit's going to say "lel pix or didnt happen," and the rumor just comes right back up. Also, if WR64 had multiple versions like Ocarina of Time, then any credibility this myth has may be found there. I hate to be the guy to say "Do it again," but you might just have to if you want to really say "Myth busted."

Joke's on you... I did record it! I just haven't put it all together into a story. The problem is, because it goes on for 40 minutes, is that it exceeds my usual game recording time and there's an awkward jump cut.
I just posted here first to see if you guys had any more insight.

Oh good! If you've recorded, then there's nothing to be concerned with...well, except that it's a 40-minute video of a guy riding a jet-ski in circles to see orcas that never appear, which would be exactly as boring as it sounds. But as far as a debunk? Like I said, "Myth busted."

Basically, I've been recording playthroughs of several games in order to put together How-To videos. Potentially NinDB branded. I'll be editing them quite heavily, but in each case I'm trying to push myself to actually beat as many in-game challenges as I can. This was a disappointing conclusion, but it may have helped to inspire the direction I'll take it. I may have to do it again anyway, as I did it using the Dolphin Code. And to finish it, I'd also need to test the Killer Whales in Southern Island code (35 points before reaching Southern Island) so I can at least end on a killer whale. I hope

You can always put it in fast foreword. That'd be the simplest way to show it without actually having to have it be 40 minutes long.

Played a bit of WR64 back in the day and good god, I think I heard of this back in the nineties in a gaming magazine, it sounded so crazy tedious I didn't think anyone would try it. Good on you for actually going out to debunk it though. The only two WR cheats I remember working were using a dolphin as a jet ski (in warm up mode) and pressing the start button while performing a stunt get more points in Stunt mode. I may have to do it again anyway, as I did it using the Dolphin Code. And to finish it, I'd also need to test the Killer Whales in Southern Island code (35 points before reaching Southern Island) so I can at least end on a killer whale. I hope Don't killer whales appear on the stage by default? I remember seeing them back in the day. Even this video has killer whales in it (and the player has 44 points) (At 0:57 just behind the sunken ship) (I have a bad feeling this killer whales on SI cheat isn't what your talking about)

There is always a Killer Whale on Southern Island, but if you reach Southern Island with 35 points (Hard or above), it's followed by a Killer Whale calf. Finish with 45 points (Expert) and it's followed by 2 calves. This is odd though. I have done the maths, and you can never reach Southern Island with exactly 45 points. Nevertheless, I have achieved the first calf myself and seen the second on a video.
What appears to have happened is that Nintendo's official site grouped together a bunch of "nature related" codes under one headline. As time stretched on, the details became muddled. The Killer Whale slipped into legend.
The Killer Whale code does not appear on my go-to Japanese cheat code website. It takes half an hour, sure, but did nobody actually try it? Worse still, I've seen one or two less reputable code sites suggest that 50 laps will make a penguin appear on the beach. I'm not even going to bother with this one.
Oddly, that same Japanese site listed another code. Enter warm-up mode 20 times in a row and you will race behind a big dolphin. I tried it and it worked. This may have been where the code originated (the number of warm-up laps to get the Killer Whale is anywhere from 20-30 on many cheat sites).
Riding the Dolphin definitely works. I have tested it and I was actually playing in dolphin mode when I passed the 30 lap mark for the first time. I'm aware this may affect the result, so I will test on a jetski. I guess (and I hate to say it) I should probably test it on the big dolphin too. One mistake and the number of laps resets to zero. I confirmed this in a test with the baby dolphins. Not a fun day!
I've kinda moved off this for now, as I've been working on an update for NinDB... partially inspired by these adventures.
