I recently had this conversation regarding Ness's absence. I pointed out that Mr. Saturn AND the Franklin Badge were in the game, which probably means that Ness is a hidden character once more. Same goes for Captain Falcon. Sakurai loves Captain Falcon AND Ness. He wouldn't leave them out, even if he doesn't believe they should be prominent.
But really, there are so many DS games. SO MANY! We can't reasonably expect to have representation from every single one already.
And let's not forget the other thing that happened after Brawl's launch: DSiWare and WiiWare. Nintendo entered download games. And whatever you think about their release catalogue, there's no denying that they SATURATED their download spaces with new franchises. Where's Spotto? Where's Pullblox? Where's Looksley's Line Up? Where's A Kappa's Trail? Where's Eco Shooter: Plant 530? Where's ThruSpace or Fluidity?
This is why the existence of this thread is up for question. Its just... There are so many franchises that haven't been seen yet, and might only appear as stickers. Then there are ones that could reasonably be expected to give us a playable character. Like Shulk. I want a playable Shulk, and a stage set during a Mechon invasion. Xenoblade Chronicles looked incredible on the Wii... This is one case where seeing it in HD on the Wii U would actually make sense.
Why haven't we seen it yet? Either it's not going to happen, or it's just too early. Let's say that we have until 18th July (random summer date) before the 3DS version comes out. That's still 70 Smash Bros. Dojo updates. Maybe there'll be another Nintendo Direct too. Or E3. Maybe Shulk is also a hidden character and won't be seen until after the game comes out.
I still remember everyone screaming "fake" at Mr. Game & Watch in Melee when the first screenshot of him emerged, because the fan had chosen to take it on the Kongo Jungle 64 stage... Because nobody knew there were returning stages at that point either.
If you like, I've become a bit of an embittered old war horse when it comes to Smash updates. Make of that what you will... Just enjoy the flow of new content and don't be surprised if the game you loved is only a trophy or a sticker. It has a lot of competition.
