The new Alex Kidd design is p'ugly though. Again with the "New" stuff. It's not new. That's what I'm saying. It's just an adaptation of an old design. The fact that Alex Kidd looks like a hobbit is not something that just crawled out of nowhere.

It is new. He's been slightly re-designed. That's new. What definition of "new" are you going by?

...Yeah, an adaptation of an old design is still a new design. Nobody's saying it's not the same character, I don't know where you're pulling that from. It has enough of the old stuff that you can tell who it is, but that doesn't make it the same design. I'd actually say there are more differences between these two Alex Kidd designs than there are between modern and classic Sonic, would you say those designs are the same too? At least Alex's hair is still same length and shape, bangs notwithstanding. "His hair is exactly the same, except where it's different."

Would you call Twilight Princess Link a redesign of Ocarina of Time Adult Link? Would you say Twilight Princess Link is a new design? ...Yeah, an adaptation of an old design is still a new design. I'm not saying anyone's saying they're different characters. I don't know where you're pulling that from. And honestly, when it comes to modern/classic Sonic, I really don't see what the big fuss is about with those two. It is a redesign, but it's not like it's really all that huge of one. It could be much more severe, for example, what happened to Pit. When I look at Sonic, I see a fat kid who hit puberty and lost weight. When I look at Alex Kidd, I see a 3D version of a design which has only ever been 2D. At least Alex's hair is still same length and shape, bangs notwithstanding. "His hair is exactly the same, except where it's different." Seriously? One damn difference. Worse, one damn difference which a light breeze could fix. You're seriously willing to go there?

.....It's a new design. Not completely new, but mostly new.

.....It's a new design. Not completely new, but mostly new. Well, I'll give you this, you're consistent. But it's hard for me to say the Links or the Alex Kidds are different to serious enough of an extent to consider the later design "Redesigned." New in the sense of "It's the younger design," yes. New in the sense of "It's a younger design and it's different from the older one?" I will not go that far. Just to summarize what I'm saying here, Alex Kidd in Sega Racing isn't a redesign, because it's not a new design. It's just a modernized take on the old design. This isn't like Donkey Kong or Ganondorf, where the design did intrinsically change. With Alex Kidd, it's just a slight update to the outfit. It's new, in the same sense that Link, or even better Mario get new designs. Which, I hope, means that we've just been arguing semantics and can move on.

Shrike, what are you even trying to argue here? The Link's you posted aren't even the same character. Yeah, OoT Link is in Twilight Princess, but he looks like this. The new Alex Kid is the same Alex Kid. It's a modern design on an old character. Old Alex Kid is a chubby little monkey, new Alex Kid is a skinny freak. Can this debate end now? It kind of sucks.

Shrike, what are you even trying to argue here? The Link's you posted aren't even the same character. Yeah, OoT Link is in Twilight Princess, but he looks like this. You're missing the point. No, OoT Link and TP Link aren't the same character. But we're talking about designs and how they relate to one another. I could point to situations where it is the same character. Would you say that Mario was redesigned for Sunshine? Short-sleeved shirt! But the outfit at large is still more or less intact. It's hardly a redesign, even granted the minor changes...er...change...to said design. Basically, what I'm arguing is this: Minor changes to a design do not constitute a redesign. Overhauls to a design constitute a redesign. Alex Kidd maintains the basic design schema from Enchanted Castle. It's now clearly loosened up, but it's not a redesign. It's a valid extrapolation from both the drawing and the sprite from Enchanted Castle.

This did not warrant a page-and-a-half of pointless off-topic discussion. I thought the thread's original topic was pretty interesting. It'd be a shame if I had to lock it.

I guess I'm done. I do want to talk about redesigns in general though. Not necessarily whether or not characters have been redesigned, but the topic's got my attention turned that way. I'll probably wait a week before starting it, though. Y'know, to avoid post-argument bitterness.

Final word: That Alex Kidd design in Segger All-Stars Racing is a redesign. An ugly one. Take it from an actual artist (two artists if you include Kirbychu).

Leeeeeeeeet's go ahead and switch things up a bit. Why do you guys think Sega abandoned Alex Kidd? I personally never enjoyed his games. Also, his design WAS pretty ugly. To be honest, I could never understand why Sega thought he could be a potential mascot. I mean, there are a few similarities to Alex Kidd games and Mario games, but they're just so clunky. The hit boxes for enemies always seemed really small too.
