Reviving a dead thread. I'm not an expert of technical sound format things, but I love the complexity of Mr. Gimmick and it had a great soundtrack to go with it.

I'm unsure if it's just me but personally feel like since NES had more basic sounds it's harder to find distinctive sound fonts.

I don't really know anything about sound fonts, either, but I think it's kinda interesting how European NES games had such a distinct sound, similar to how games sounded on those old European computer systems. They have a lot of "trills" and note-bending "whines." It's kinda hard to explain, but you probably know what I mean. Just listen to some of Rare's old NES soundtracks.
