Just when you thought DSiWare and soon to be closed Miiverse were feeling alone, Nintendo has announced the official shutdown of the Wii Shop Channel on Wii/Wii U. Like the DSiWare store before it, first the "adding funds" shutdown, and then the channel will shutdown later.
Users can add funds until March 27 2018. Wii Shop Channel shut down on January 31st 2019.
So you have just under 6 months to actually use the WSC like you normally would for the purchase of VC or WiiWare titles. Now I'm trying to figure out what (exclusive) games I'm missed would be worth buying, especially with the PAL 50/60 HZ issues.

There's a lot of WiiWare games I never really got to play but I may just have to settle for adding Dr. Mario and WarioWare plus whatever VC Mario games I missed to my collection. :\

Here's NoA's official notice.Good to get a warning so far in advance. I think I've got 100 spare points sitting on my account, but I don't really have any plans to buy anything new. (Unless maybe there's some cheap DLC in one of the Crystal Chronicles games.) I guess we're getting an idea of the shelf life of digital game distribution. Xbox Live Indie Games on Xbox 360 is shutting down in about a week, also.

BUMP!Reminder! Normal Wii Shop Channel functionality will end March 27th. AS IN LESS THAN A MONTH! List of games currently exclusive to WiiWareVirtual Console games listUse the above lists to find games you want to buy only found on the WSC. The only WiiWare game I know I definitely want is WarioWare DIY Showcase and I'm stil deciding on some of the other Nintendo published ones. I still haven't transfer my WSC downloads from my Wii to my Wii U yet, is anyone else in the same position? I quite liked the use of GCN controller as a classic controller substitute and it looks like I'm either going to have to buy GCN to CC adapters or buy a Classic Controller if I do a transfer. I think the Wii U Gamepad can function as one though.

I'm not going to transfer my Wii data to my Wii U, because the Wii U lacks a very essential function: GameCube-Wii save data transfer. Once I make the move, I will not be able to transfer Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance save data to Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn.
Having said that, I think I need to check my system and see it didn't die out while I wasn't looking. Maybe it's time to think about hacking the system, grab the save data, dump the disc images and play them on an emulator.
Back when I was using the Wii actively, I was thinking about getting Maboshi's Arcade, but couldn't fit its price of 800 Wii Points with anything else. I'm not interested in VC, there are no other WiiWare games I'm interested in (maybe Pole's Big Adventure, but that game's no longer fun after you watch a playthrough), and Wii Point Cards come in units of 1000 points.
But I guess I'm still not that intersted after all these years, so I'll just let it go.

I've been considering getting some Wii Points for some things, but I might just let it slide.
It might be better to do it sooner rather than later, tho, since I would expect the servers to get overloaded in the final days/hours.

Art Style games are always a good choice. I personally recommend Orbital.
Bonsai Barber is also a really great WiiWare game.

Chick Chick Boom was an interesting game for it, as well as the Virtual Console re-release of Pulseman (which was also available in North America and Europe). It's sad to see it go and I really hope some of the games that were exclusive to it return (although some of them like Chick Chick Boom have arguably passed their time and/or would have licensing issues to bring back).

The final week begins, and now I'm just learnt that there happen to be visual differences to running VC/WiiWare games on a regular Wii vs the Wii mode (or virtual Wii/vWii) of the Wii U. On the bright side I finally came up with a nice list of titles I want while sadly learning that the PAL version SNES Simcity seems to have finally been pulled from the WSC (I swear it was there 2 months ago, while it was delisted in NA when EA released Simcity 2013) WiiWare games WarioWare DIY Showcase Mashobi's Arcade Mr Driller W Rock n Roll Climber Hydroventure (Fluidity) You Me and and Cubes Castlevania Rebirth Bonsai Barber Optional, possibly all 5 Art Style games? VC Actraiser Zombies Ate My Neighbors Ogre Battle (SNES) Ogre Battle (N64) Castlevania Rondo of Blood From what I'm seen I can get an exact Wii Point total (including Euro "import" VC prices) with this combo of games and the only 50Hz issue I have to worry about is Actraiser and ZAMN Back when I was using the Wii actively, I was thinking about getting Maboshi's Arcade, but couldn't fit its price of 800 Wii Points with anything else. I'm strongly considering getting Maboshi's Arcade because it looks like a weirdly unique title that has no current equal, if you own a Japanese Wii have you considered getting the Grezzo developed/Nintendo published WiiWare exclusive game Line Attack Heroes? It was supposed to get a western release (including having a playable English build at E3) but never happened.

That seems interesting. I'll think about it if I can be bothered to reconnect my Wii. It's right there on my desk, but it's disconnected and there's no way to display YPbPr video with my monitor (native support for DVI only), so I'll have to rely on my capture device (Intensity Shuttle), which simply isn't the best way to do it.
I just noticed that the prices were raised by 2.8% (following the raise of Japanese sales tax from 5% to 8%, and 1.08/1.05=1.028), so there's no point trying to use up all Wii Points.
Do modern Nintendo prepaid cards work with the Wii?

I don't think so, I think they only work for 3DS and up.

I just want to clarify: This does apply to Wii U content too? So if I want to get DLC for the Wii U, I have until basically Monday to get funds in? Or is this just for the Wii? Referring to home consoles specifically because I don’t have a 3DS.

No, that only affects the Wii Shop Channel. The Nintendo eShop on Wii U is not affected.
Do note that this does affect the Wii Shop Channel in the Wii Menu that is offered in Wii U as a backwards compatibility mode.
Can you do this after Monday? Buy WiiWare on Wii ➨ No Buy WiiWare on Wii U ➨ No Buy Wii U games on Wii U ➨ Yes

Okay, so I should still be able to, say, buy Smash DLC, but if I want to buy, say, Mega Man 9, I have until Monday. Good to know, since I have all my must-haves from the Wii but not from the Wii U by a long shot.
