Okay this happened yesterday, did anyone here watch it? Seemed pretty good, did seem like a bit of an overlap with some of 2015 games though.

I actually did watch this. It's funny, because I didn't even know when it was taking place, but I just happened to notice it right before it started, so I watched it.
I was rooting for John Numbers because I thought it would be interesting to have a repeat champion.
I wonder if Nintendo will be having these on a regular basis now.

Only watched it for the Odyssey gameplay. The 2015 version had this nostalgia factor that makes it interesting, but I think hosting one again now dilutes that. The tournament itself is actually kind of boring for those who watch competitive gaming regularly, and I think here they should stress the fact that they show multiple games including future releases.
If they want to make this a regular occurrence, they should drop the throwback theme of the logo and the name. Or they can keep abusing it the same way the made Super Mario Bros. 1 lose all of its nostalgic values.

That's funny, because I was thinking how much I liked that they were still using the same "totally '80s" logo from 1990, and I hope that they don't change it.
I do think that it's mainly a promotional thing for their own games (which made it strange to me that Pokken Tournament DX wasn't part of it), and the rules are tailored to show off the games rather than for high-level competitive play. (Altho, the whole above ground/underground thing seems needlessly complicated.) But from a casual standpoint, I think it's a fun bit of fan service.
