So, the rumors last year about Nintendo partnering with Universal to produce a new animated Super Mario movie were true. Here's the official PR: Illumination (HQ: Santa Monica, CA USA) and Nintendo Co., Ltd., (HQ: Kyoto Minami-ku; Representative Director and President: Tatsumi Kimishima) today announced a partnership to develop a movie starring the Mario character.
The project will be produced by Chris Meledandri, Founder and CEO of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director, Fellow of Nintendo.
The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal Pictures.
With this project, Nintendo will pursue its goals of effectively leveraging its intellectual properties in mediums outside of video games, and of bringing smiles to people around the world.
With this project, Illumination will continue to fulfill its mission of infusing joy and discovery into every property, allowing worldwide audiences of all ages to connect with the beloved characters and story from one of the world's most popular franchises. First question on my mind: Will Charles Martinet do Mario's voice?

This sounds amazing ^^ <3, Pokémon have a lot of movies but we haven't seen much Mario (with a few exceptions). Has there been any further news about this since yet? ✿

All I'm aware of is that it is tentatively planned for a 2022 release.
Also, Nintendo's partnership with Universal is probably the reason Mario wasn't in Ralph Breaks the Internet.

What kind of movie is that, even? Are we going to see Freakachu, Mario edition?

From what I know, it will be completely CGI, and not a live-action/CGI mix like Sonic and Pokémon. It's being made by Illumination, the same studio that makes the Despicable Me and Secret Life of Pets movies, as well as that new Grinch movie that came out last year (none of which I've personally seen). They were apparently chosen by Shigeru Miyamoto after he met with the head of the studio. Miyamoto is also co-producing the film.

BUMP! Discussion for the Mario movie has been scattered around, so I thought I'd revive this old, outdated thread. Anyway, here's a fun bit of marketing: a website advertising Super Mario Bros. Plumbing, complete with a TV ad using the theme song from the old Super Mario Bros. Super Show cartoon. The website is filled with easter eggs, too, if you click around. I'm actually looking forward to it, but I probably won't go to a movie theater to see it. I'll just wait for it to be available on video or streaming.
