When it comes to tournament Smash, I'm fairly certain I've voiced my opinions on the community in the past, but if I haven't, I'll reiterate: I have little respect for the tournament community for a good number of reasons, none of which are actually relevant to this post so I won't be going into any real detail regarding them. What I will say, though, is that while I have a deep dislike of many decisions that tournament Smash players have made, I am pretty well on board with a few of their decisions, such as not allowing items and customization for most fighters (none of Palutena's moves are good enough to break her in tournament play and the decisions made for the Miis, namely default size & 1111 moves, are a massive handicap to characters who, designed ideally, are actually quite well-balanced.)
Now let's get crazy.
Back in Smash 64 and Melee, players would get bonus points at the end of a round based on their performance in the game. This got cut in Brawl, but I find that to be a missed opportunity, not just for the games themselves, but for the community as well. I would like to see this scoring system return in a future game (I'm looking at you, Ultimate), and further, I'd like to see it implemented in tournament play. Here's what I mean.
There should be three categories for tournaments, Skill and Style. Skill is the current standard - a timed stock match where the winner is the last fighter/team still in the ring. Here, it's all about skill, so the rules do not need to change to make this work. The other category is Style, which is where the old points system comes into play - you aren't looking to win, necessarily, but instead, you want to make the best show possible. Style would be a strict Time battle - endless Stock, so players are strapped in for the full x minutes, while all items, stages, and, stage hazards are open, allowing for as much point-earning mayhem as possible. Highest score wins, though for live tournaments, audience takes priority if score and audience disagree, using the very scientific method of "Whichever player gets the loudest screams." Can you get through without a single item? That's bonus points. Can you get through using only items? Again, bonus points. Score a suicide KO? Bonus points. Taunt a KO? Bonus points. Land a seemingly-impossible recovery? Oh boy, bonus points.
There would certainly be a lot to consider in something like this, both from a game development standpoint (What sort of things should score points? How many points? Should different characters get points in different ways?) and from a tournament organizing standpoint (Would there be interest from players? Would it attract an audience?), but if nothing else, it's something I'd like to see, so nyeh!
