Um, where do cross-generational Nintendo topics go again? The general board?
Kirby games can roughly be divided to the main series and the spinoffs. From an official perspective, the main series refer to games whose Japanese titles start with 星のカービィ. These include:
Anything else isn't in the main 星のカービィ series, even if they're side-scrolling action games.
A recent trend in the series is that pure spinoff games have pretty much stopped appearing since Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. There are a ton of 3DS spinoffs, but here's the thing: They're all based off the standard Kirby physics and rendering engines, with very standard style and feel. The eShop titles feel this way because they're based off the sub-games of Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot, but the same also applies to Kirby Battle Royale. This may be understandable since it's also an action game with standard controls (if you can call Kirby in 3D space standard).
Well, I wrote all these just to say one thing: It seems that custom-engine Kirby spinoffs that aren't based on anything may become a thing of the past. We haven't seen any Kirby game that's not a side-scrolling or 3D action game of some kind since 2011 (the sub-games of Kirby Mass Attack), unless you count the sub-games of Star Allies (which I really doubt will be turned into full games).
It seems that the "other" side of Kirby is silently leaving us as we celebrate the very rapid releases of the more "standard" games on 3DS and Switch.
[The timing of this post (11 hours before Kirby Star Allies wave 2 update) is purely coincidental.]
