I'm getting into the visual novel genre. I love how these games are immersive, in text and music, and can have deep social meanings. I'm starting with "If My Heart Had Wings" but am unsure which others to try. Another visual novel I'm trying is "Bury me, my love" (a history based visual novel about a refugee from Syria to France and her hardships). I have a soft-spot for feminine, love based visual novels, but also don't want heavily/inappropriately sexualised ones.
Does anyone here know any VNs they can recommend to me (in fact they don't have to be on Switch if there are any on 3DS/PC I may try them as well). Thanks in advance.

That's OK ^^
Thank you so much! (I don't mind the length or platform if the gameplay appeals)
I feel that VNs are good in encouraging you to read while serving as a video game at the same time. With enough innovation they can be fun.
Yes. The romance sub-genre floats my boat, but is not everyone's taste. According to my friend who plays them, unfortunately too sexualisation is common in the genre. (I don't like how eroticism is used a lot in them).
I also like Harvest December, but played it in Japanese so didn't adequately understand it. There is an English version however I may pick up.
I'm sorry to hear you couldn't find what you were looking for. Yeah, I think what there should be more of are digital books (like the old text adventure games that focused not on romance but folkore/culture, crime/history) in general. Hmm.
My friend who also has similar taste to me, and recommended one known as Stein's Gate though she didn't like some elements of the story.
"One visual novel I really liked was Steins;Gate but unfortunately there were a few scenes that were pretty uncomfortable, there was a character who was implied to be trans who was not handled well"
Another VN she likes is The Expression: Amrilato which has helped her learn Esperanto.
I found a recent link about non-romance visual novels. https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/6q1bz7/nonromance_visual_novel_or_text_base_games_with/
(I'm unsure if you still want to get into the genre, hoping there may be some titles that interest you you didn't know of?)

Gonna move this to the General Chat board.
The only VN I've ever tried was a freeware PC game called Katawa Shoujo. It came out in 2012, and it garnered a little mainstream attention for some reason. I'm guessing because it was surprisingly well done considering its origins and subject matter. Basically, some anonymous 4chan users got together and made it based on an idea by a Japanese doujinshi artist about dating girls with various disabilities. It sounds incredibly exploitative, and considering it came from 4chan, you would probably expect it to be really offensive. However, it's actually surprisingly tasteful and respectful of its subject matter. The girls are never portrayed as victims of their disabilities; they're just normal girls who happen to have disabilities. (So does the boy you play as, actually.) It does, however, have some explicit X-rated content, but there's an option to disable it. Even then, there's still some nudity, so it might not be quite what you're looking for. Hardcore Gaming 101 has an article on it.It does have nice artwork, and some really beautiful music. I only tried it because I was curious and it was free, and I only played through one route. (Well, two if you count the secret joke ending.) I've never bothered with any other VNs since then, though.

This appeals to me as I like listening to people in stigmatised groups like the disabled. Exactly, that sounds progressive, deep down we're people with dignity, and disabilities shouldn't have to limit us.
I will read about it.

It seems Nintendo had their own obscure mystery visual novel (with text adventure elements) for Satellaview, called Rの書斎 (R's Study). It's not new, though videos of it are quite recent and I haven't heard of it before.
(English Satellaview wiki article)
This is its GiantBomb description:
There are a few, long videos of it such as this.
Some kind of promotional flyer for it from Yahoo Auctions Japan.

I wonder if the title is inspired by D's Dining Table, which came out in 1995.
Which also makes me wonder, is R's Study also a horror game? A preliminary search shows that R's Study is at least scary, but to what extent?

Thanks for your post. ^^ Umm, yeah I got the impression there were horror elements in it too but have not analysed it much yet.
