So I mentioned this series earlier. ^^ Also my new avatar is from Monster Racers. I've hoarded most of these games for a really long time except the PlayStation version of Monster Race 1, but never really played them except for Monster Racers for DS lol (which I haven't been able to complete because I didn't know how to progress the story).
Though listening to the music and exploring some of the cute and quirky designs have got me into it. :] (The same reason I got into Densetsu no Starfy/Stafy really except I didn't hoard Starfy in this case).
Also it will be nice to get into a new series, in particular a monster battling one, since Pokémon usually gets the spotlight, and the most obscure monster battling games/series aren't really talked about it in depth. My friend RacieB is a big fan of the Keitai Denjuu Telefang series developed by Natsume (the Namco Atari one) and published by Smilesoft; so similarly I might start getting really into it (eventually) but at the moment I don't know much at all.
This series by Koei has many monsters which you can capture and raise, but unlike Pokémon, monsters race each other. As a monster racer, you travel the world participating in cups aiming to be the very best. According to Japanese Wikipedia the first game was released as a commerative work for Koei's 20th anniversary.
On January 22, 2009 in Japan, Monster☆Racer was released for DS. This game carries over some of the monsters from Monster Race, but the 世界観 (outlook on the world?) is different; I don't know in which context. Also it can be considered a spiritual successor to the original Monster Race series rather than being part of it.
On May 11, 2010 a localised version was released for North America on May 11, 2010; making this the only Monster Race(rs) game to be released outside of Japan. There are numerous cult international fans of the game, but it seems rarer to see a mention of the Game Boy and PlayStation series.
Games:
Monster Race (もんすたあ★レース) (6 March, 1998、Game Boy)
- Starring protagonist Lenny (レニー), whose rival is Batch (バッチ). There are 100 monsters to collect.
Monster Race: Okawari (もんすたあ★レース おかわり) (October 2, 1998、Game Boy) (Okawari means doing something again like having a second helping of food, so maybe it's like A Second Round of Monster Race - but I don't know if that translation works; maybe it is a food pun like simply A Second Serving of Monster Race)
- There are some new characters and three new monsters (bringing the total to 103), and some monster habitats, appearance rates, among other details have changed, such as a few different music tracks. Also the game is now played from Batch's perspective rather than Lenny's.
Monster Race (もんすたあ★レース) (December 17, 1998、PlayStation)
- It's a remake of the first two games, and you can play both games in one. There are graphics and sound improvements (also some of the music is based on the Okawari version.
Monster Race 2 (もんすたあ★レース2)(March 12, 1999, Game Boy Color but Game Boy compatible)
- OHMYGOSH THE BOX ART IS SO CUTE!! ◕ ‿ ◕ <3 This game is set 100 years before the original games, and most of the city names are the same but the map and story is completely different. As usual, a young boy (now Sammy (サミー)) participates in cups to be the world's best monster racer (yeah same old Pokémon badge quest stuff lol). There are changes to the racing terrain, such as new どかん (explosive?/earthen pipe?) and てっぱん (iron plate?) terrains, and the addition of accessories. Now there are a total of 200 monsters 2! >w<.
