The Game Boy Camera was quirky with its designs, scenes, and such (and arguably its shape itself, and once being known as one of the smallest cameras - and it was a thermal camera restricted to the low resolution of the Game Boy's screen, with colours from the Game Boy Printer being restricted to the red, white, yellow, blue printer paper of variable contrasts. Actually we almost got a Game Boy Printer Color, but it was never released.) Game Boy Camera also had various minigames (Run, Run Run, Space Fever II, the DJ music creation minigame, Ball), cameos in photos including old Nintendo toys before they made video games, etc.
The Nintendo 64DD and the Mario Artist games (among a few other 64DD games with support to bring over photos from the cameras) unfortunately didn't sell very well (and so) Nintendo tried on two occasions to bring camera functionality back; with Stage Debut for GameCube and Ningen Copy Manebito, utilising the unreleased GameEye (Manebito Camera). Both of these were cancelled. Hirokazu Tanaka actually addressed the quirkiness of Game Boy Camera in PockeCam Magazine for Satellaview; it wasn't intended to appeal to newer generations, but it was based on his personal tastes and perhaps subconscious influences.
He also answered a question about a hypothetical sequel (which you can read more about in the link to the PockeCam Magazine article I wrote above), but (that was the interviewer's question rather than his plans) in the end there were only (at least two) variations of the original program; Game Boy Camera, Game Boy Camera Gold (The Legend of Zelda photos), and possibly the "CoroCoro Comic Version" (Bakuso Kyodai Let's & Go!! MAX and Gakkyuu Ou Yamazaki photos) which still may not have been found, but can be enabled by modifying the save file anyway. Also there was a cut feature involving moving photos, maybe that was implemented into the Strawberry Channel section of the cancelled Hello Kitty Pocket Camera (Game Boy Camera Sanrio) instead?
Will we ever get a new physical camera that matches the quirkyness of the original camera?
We did however get Face Raiders for the Nintendo 3DS. It utilised the Nintendo 3DS's Camera and Augmented Reality to shoot faces you take with the camera, and likely inspired by the Space Fever II minigame in Game Boy Camera where you do the same, but without the AR. For the Nintendo DSi, there were also Nintendo DSi Camera apps such as WarioWare Snapped! and Photo Dojo.
