Hello there!
Over the past couple of years, I've had a real hankering to work on NinDB again. I want to update and add more cameos. I want to write up some new retro game guides with information from my aborted video projects. I want to get the Switch content updated before the next Nintendo console shows up!
There's been one thing standing in my way: NinDB.
It's been in a state of a half-finished redesign since about 2019. That's five years ago! My aim had been to make the website easy to read on mobile, but most of it still isn't. The biggest hurdle was converting all the game pages. There's so many! The more I worked on them the more I realised... most of them don't have much of anything on them. They're just there.
So I've taken a harsh executive decision. The game pages have gone!
"But Fry, what about all those lovely cameos and game guides?"
Don't worry... those have NOT gone. Cameos and guides have been moved to their own pages, making them much easier to browse through now. It also highlighted to me how much work could be done to improve existing cameos, not just adding new ones. But one step at a time!
The series lists and release lists have also been taken down temporarily. I need to hack out the links, update a bunch of them, and figure out how best to present them. None of these are questions I've been able to answer so far. I may well present options here at a later date.
"Is that it then? You've ditched 3/4 of the website?"
Not exactly! The features section will be getting a boost of content. It will be the new home for cancelled games and the hardware lists. It will also be the new home to three archives of classic NinDB features: Nintober, Nintendo All-Stars and Nester's wonderful Third Party Showcase. Nintober's never been on the website before. All-Stars and 3PS have been missing for 16 years. Shameful, I know!
By ditching 3/4 of the website, I have removed the biggest psychological hurdle for me working on it at all. What remains is what I find most interesting to read and to work on. I'm actually excited to finish my guides for Mach Rider, Gyromite, Joy Mech Fight, Time Twist, NES Donkey Kong and many more... I started writing some of those over a decade ago!
The relaunch will take place on Friday 26th July.
