They look like the real deal. Some of those designs appeared on the Game Boy Camera (though more appeared on the Japanese version).
But yes, Nintendo started in the Hanafuda business back in the 1800s, and stayed a playing card manufacturer until Hiroshi Yamauchi took over.

Well, yes, sorta. It was actually my mom who did the bidding and the winning, because I've been lazy and haven't gotten around to getting an ebay account. I really should do that sometime... Also, the dude is selling another set of these cards. Anyone who's interested might want to keep an eye on it. But that will be the 3rd one he's sold, so I guess he has a bunch.

Here's an important question, how do you play with these cards? Well, I won't be playing with them, because I don't want to open them up. But I've thought of purchasing another set to display opened... You can look up the rules for some games on google.
