New to the board here (well, who isn't?), and I was just curious as to what the "official" stance on emulation is here. I personally feel that talking about emulation is harmless if it's emulation for a bygone console whose games are no longer being made (so that means I feel that only the GBA emulators should be off limits). So... is it alright to talk about it here?

Talk about it, but deal in emulation in your own time. Don't ask for Roms here... do that on a chat program or something. I will not deal in Roms, but agree that talking about emulation is harmless.
Nintendo's official stance is that emulation is always bad. However, Miyamoto once said he's glad people are getting the chance to play games they might never have tried or even heard of through emulation. It's a case of artist appreciation vs. cold hard Yamauchi-style business.
Besides... what's more wrong? Emulating a 20 year old game, or emulating a 20 year old game and charging people $20 for the privilege of buying it?

I heard that Sega of Japan is haveing a service where allows you to download ROMS of thier classic consoles Legaly, but they charge some 9$(don't know how much in Yens).

I've also heard talk about MS implementing something like that through their Xbox Live service. It seems kind of pointless given the many emulators ported from the PC to the Xbox.

Tell you what though... I've collected quite a few of these Classic NES games on GBA now. There's something quite nice about having them to hand on a Game Boy. I'm getting better at Bomberman, I've FINALLY completed Zelda, Xevious is becoming second-nature... but alas I still suck ass at Ice Climber.  |
