At another forum I'm having a bit of a debate and I know that here is like, the absolute source of Nintendo knowledge.
What is HAL's official status. Second or first party? In betweenish? I remember Fryguy said something about them sticking to Nintendo from sheer devotion. Could you clarify?

It depends on what you classify as a second-party. If you think a second party is partially financed (eg. Rare, Silicon Knights) or wholly financed (eg. Retro Studios, Brownie Brown) by Nintendo... then no, HAL Laboratory is not a second-party company any more than Hudson Soft or Capcom.
If you consider a second party to be a company whose entire catalogue of recent years has been published by Nintendo, and whose devotion to the console seems to be strengthened by internal staff links (like the executive producer at one being an ex-marketing director of the other) then yes, HAL would count as a second party.
From what I can gather, though, the official "Second Party" line refers to financial arrangements and not devotion/publishing.
