Something my brother and I have been discussing for a few days... While most of the Metroid games refer to Samus as a bounty hunter, she clearly is not. She has, as far as I'm aware never done any actualy "bounty hunting".
What has she done then? She's been hired by the Gallatic Federation to investicate Space Pirtate installations, help out their soldiers, and general "special-ops" situations. What is she then?
Just something to think about.

Very interesting Narf... I see her as a sort of 'Hired gun' (go there, kill that) or perhaps a 'Problem Solver' (kinda like the New Firm in The Truth...sorry, obscure literary reference there)
Anyway, thats what I think ;D

You need to read your manuals more carefully...
When galactic peace collapsed due to the Space Pirates, the Galactic Federation hired bounty hunters to track down and destroy them. Samus Aran was one of these bounty hunters.
Of course, you'd be right that nowadays she seems to have stopped her bounty hunting to form a one-woman army against the Metroids. That, I guess, would make her a mercenary of some kind.
Also, some Nintendo guys (I forget who) said that they had no plans to make a Metroid bounty hunting game as it would have to be quite a different game altogether. Which means, hey, at least they've had a think about it.

You need to read your manuals more carefully... Well, I don't have any of the manuals for the older games.
