I hear lots of Nintendo fans complaining about the PSP and how Nintendo will be crushed if it doesn't get off its butt and make more games that utilize the DS. Sony's new PSP is a sleek little device, but the fact is it costs 100 dollars more than the DS. I think the PSP is a special feature thing that can play games, not a game device that has special features. If the PSP is all about special features, the games will be ruined to reflect that. Yes, so what if you can watch a widescreen version of Spider Man 2? It's not meant to compete the DS. It will be it's own category (like NGage), or croak like the Sega Game Gear.

From what I've been hearing, PSP has actualy been selling rather poorly. I don't think Nintendo has anything to worry about.

I will get a PSP eventually... but unlike the DS, it's not a "first day" type of thing.
As you may have heard... a few DS' have had "dead pixels" PSP has a similar problem... only it's WAY more common. So like half of the PSP owners have defected PSP's.
Then there's the price The PSP is 100 more... yet all it has is music, which it can only save on a 45 dollar memory stick, which is also required to save games, DS games are cheaper... and save inside the game card. Then PSP also has movies, which only come from three companies. Most of the movies aren't even that interesting to me. Saw and Saw 2 are the only ones I'm interested in and neither are out... and to top it off Saw 2 releases in 2006.
The battery life is quite short. You play one movie... then you only got like ten minutes of gametime to blow left.
Now we get to game selection. It's a proven fact that the DS has more games out/announced/coming combined compared to the PSP. We have better games to top it off. Already... there's four games I own and I love them all... if you count the Metroid Prime First Hunt demo as a game. Then we got PSP's selection. Don't get me wrong, I'll get quite a few games for it... especially Virtua Tennis *drool* but yeah, the DS has more I want, and I'm gonna get more. But just looking at Metal Gear Acid proves that the PSP is getting the stupidest ideas for games ever.
Me: I'm going to shoot you! *draws card* Damnit... nevermind *gets shot*
Yep, as you know, they gave a sniper-style game a card battle system. That has to be the dumbest idea all year long.
Two of the PSP games (according to IGN) got rated higher than IGN's highest rating DS game, Super Mario 64 DS, however. But I don't see Ridge Racer (also on DS) and WipEout Pure as much of a threat.
Let me name all the PSP games I'll definatly get. Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix Virtua Tennis Pacman World 3 (if I don't get it for GameCube which I more than likely will) Activision Anthology Maybe a few more
I could easily crack off four DS games I want in like ten seconds. Polarium Wario Ware Touched! Animal Crossing DS Pokémon Dash And that's not many at all!
So to summarize what I just said.
DS > PSP PSP has no chance.

They're totally different!
Say, firstly, PSP features a"widescreen" but DS has 2 screns stacked vertically. Even the screen hapes are different and have nothing similiar, how can they compete?
Also, PSP is probably a PDS without a touch screen rather than a game device. I think Sony should make a touch screen for it - a thing that even my cell phone does have!
Plus, DS aims at changing people's way of playing, and its new features are very attracting! As for the game part of PSP, it's just a traditional game device.
PSP may be just a pocket-sized version of PS2! So, like PS2 and Gamecube, they're just totally different and should not be considered as competitors.
Everything are different. It's just Sony thinks that Nintend may be a competitor, other than that, nothing.

Yes, it will compete with the DS. They are both the first generation of 3D handheld gaming systems, and while both are very different, they can't help but compete. The PSP is supposedly a magnificent piece of gaming technology... attractive, sleek, an all-swallowing screen, and high-res 3D graphics.
The DS, as we all know, got to market first, and as such has an advatantage. High sales of hardware are a bonus, and the mass software support enjoyed by the Game Boy series has aided the software lineup for the future. Low price point, and of course the all-swallowing Pokémon franchise for the lower age range of the market (not having Pokémon could indeed be the PSP's biggest problem).
They are competitors in that they are after the same slice of the market. If Sony aims only for the higher age range, like they always claim to do (but which are lies) then they will suffer because of it. The Playstation series has a large range of games aimed at kids and adults, hence its popularity across the board... but I can't imagine many parents letting their children take a PSP into school at that price point.
But it's early days. The Gamecube sold faster than the PS2 and X-Box in its first few weeks on sale, but sales slipped further on... but all Nintendo needs for the DS are some strong franchises lined up... and they have... so we can rest easy that Mr. Satoru Iwata is determined to make this work.

Pokemon is what brought Game Boy out of the shadows...and increased Game Boy sales, not to mention link cables!
And Activision Anthology? That's for GBA. You don't need the PSP to play the original VCS Pitfall, do you?

I got the GBA port... as well as the PS2 port. I just want it to improve my PSP library.

In the sales Nintendo is winning in Most countrys.Nintendo is even winning in Japan by 10,000. When the PSP was relesed 10 days after the DS. Also it dosn't even have its Best games yet. I think DS might win overall. Lets hope.

Neither systems have a strong line-up at the moment, but right now, the PSP's blows DS's out of the water.

It's all too easy to sit here and go:
"DS rockzors!!111 the PSP is crap and Sony shood fail!!!11! W00t..."
Now, I have no idea exactly what that means - it's a composite of some of the bizarre lingo I've read in forums around the place - bizarre... I tend to prefer correct spelling and full punctuation, but that's off-topic.
Back to my point. We can go on about how good the DS is and say the PSP sucks, but is that honestly the case? I'm know most people in here are capable of giving credit to something that is good.
I think the PSP is a great piece of technology. If I had buckets of money, I'd probably get one. It's technologically outstanding for a handheld device, albeit simply a portable PS2. The DS gives me what I want out of games though - innovative and often weird gameplay that's fun and doesn't take itself seriously at all.
They are both good systems. They are very different systems, catering to different types of gameplay. I think they are both good. Due to their differences, they theoretically should not be competing - realistically, they will be competing, as they co-exist in a market, where consumers have limited disposable income.
Let's not get into this DS vs. PSP discussion, as it's invalid. Instead, we should talk about the merits of both systems and use this to see what might be in store for us gamers into the future...

I am worried that Nintendo hasn't prepared a strong lineup of ACTUAL games. They need their Pokemon sooner rather than later (and it has to be 3D to really sell the DS). That will secure it a long and prosperous future.
Wireless trading and battles? Ahhh, bliss.
And get the Mario game out, get some popular titles going... a 3D F-Zero... not all necessarily taking advantage of the DS's abilities, but securing it a future where experimental titles will be better received.
But releasing Nintendogs at the same time as pink and milky blue DS's? Having Japan's biggest popstar advertising? Good idea... targeting the girl market in one heavy swoop.

I'm no girl, but the turquoise DS looks f'en awesome. If only Nintendo Aus can release it here within the next month, then I would get it. And I agree that all of the DSs games are gimmicky, but the problem is, if Nintendo really consider the DS to be a "third pillar", and Nintendo is planning a new GB with GCN-style graphics, then maybe it needs to have these gimmicky games. I personally think Ninty should've game out with a GCN-graphiced, big screen DS, but its too late for that. They have to work with what they've got a give us games so that people (not just people like us, who would by Dog Crap on a stick if it had the name Nintendo on it), but regular people. Online Mario Kart will do this. Online Pokemon will do this. etc, etc. Electroplankton and Yoshi Touch and Go wont.

I have to say that me and Andronicus are quite similar in approach to this matter: I'm one of those guys who likes to see each side of an argument or discussion. I tolerate other consoles, even think some of them are quite good But they're just not for me thanks. In the words of a damn good comedy sketch: "while I admire the PSP's charisma and giant screen, if it came round to my house, started jumping on my sofa, and folding over pages in my favourite magazines, I'd say OY! PSP!! NOOO!!! WHILE I admire your charisma and giant screen, you can GET OFF my sofa and DON'T TOUCH my magazines!!! BUGGER OFF! In the nicest possible way of course."

Ahh, Harry Enfield... marvellous.
I agree that other consoles have their benefits... PS2 has some good games, though the system itself is a bit of a joke. The X-Box has a lot of good games and some amazing hardware (the hard drive was a touch of genius). Nintendo makes the best games of all, and their hardware is only a touch behind Microsoft's.
The PSP can run amazing looking games, and even has a tiny handful of games that play well. The DS can't run games that look that amazing, and that too only has a few games that play well. Shame that. Could be tight.
The Game Boy Advance still rules though. Better than PSP!
