Now I'm not some lame "best thing ever" fanboy who wants it to go on forever, but unlike most fans, I can actually see the bad in the series.
But the real question is: Is there room for improvement?
For one, the main reason it's berated a lot is because Hudson barely rectifies any deficiencies from past MP games in the new ones, as you previously stated.
Sure, there may be some new features, but they don't affect the main aim of the game. At all.
MP5-7 have become but mere "do anything" deals. Sure, there may be nifty features like Super Duel Mode (5) and Speak Up (6), but do they actually aid you in beating the game? Quite frankly, no. Even if there is a way to do just that, it's actually done in the most ridiculous manner imaginable. Mainly in 6, buy all the goodies in the Star Bank? Meh. Plus, the Miracle Book made me vomit so hard.
Plus, the single-player modes in 5-7 aren't even dynamic enough. I mean, look at them. 5's Story Mode is lame (what with all the mass-dueling) and rather weird concept at that. 6's Solo Mode (this is when all the story of the game is lost) is quite a good one, but it needs a lot more boards than that. 7's Solo Mode is average, but having only one objective per board is just as bland (and there's not even a storyline involved here). Would be good if they pulled an SM64/Sunshine on that element. They just need to integrate storylines a lot more into the game, and then it'll be worthwhile.
5's Super Duel Mode was lacking on so many levels. It may be a very nice and promising concept, but when you go further into it, it just seems tacky, particularly with uber-easy competitions like getting the flags. B-b-b-b-b-b-b... It would be better if it were like Mario Kart, including a Racing Competition and also 3 or 4 players taking place.
7's 8-Player Mode is a hilarious concept, to say the least. But it should be integrated much more into the game as well.
And the graphics (particularly the character models) aren't much to look at either. Maybe they could be saving space with them, which more or less appears to be a respectable move on their part, I guess.
I know a lot about the series, mainly because the formula and mechanics are very easy to comprehend. They really needed to add something more intriguing to the basic board game play in each previous installment. That would be good. But again, some of the new features on them just tend to slow the game down even more. It would help if they actually tried to reduce time consumption on it. And if you play a board on 50 turns, you're insane. XD
But other than that, I think they're doing fine with it so far. MP games are quite decent additions to anyone's library, regardless of how they're played (mainly for either the sake of collectivism or keeping one busy) and are still worthwhile and entertaining. Of course, it's kinda fun with other people playing, but only when the situation calls for it. But still, even if you do play with others, it's really not that hot when you compare it to other games like Mario Kart, SSBM, and Wario Ware: Mega Party Games (don't get me wrong, I actually love this). And as you know, I do enjoy playing those games from time to time. But hey, what seasoned Mario/Nintendo fan doesn't?
